Kitchen Garden Program

We are very proud to announce we have been successful with our Grant application.  We applied earlier this year for a grant that would provide funds and training to be part of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program.  Mrs Connie Drossaert and Mrs Glenis Cheyne are going to lead this program.  They start their training this week.

To get the garden growing we started planting up our raised garden beds.   The children tilled the soil, which means; Tilling is the practice of aerating the soil to permit moisture and air to permeate, allowing seeds to germinate, encouraging root growth, controlling weed growth, and integrating fertilizers into the soil.

The children will learn about gardening skills and how and when to plant herbs and vegetables.  This week we planted coriander seeds, we put some into small pots which they can take to class and watch grow.  We also had left over seeds so we planted one of the raised garden beds.  We will be able to compare how well they grow.

We look forward to getting more vegetables planted over the coming weeks.  If you are interested in being involved please drop in and see Glenis.  The garden club currently runs on a Tuesday afternoon at 1.50pm.

As part of our partnership with the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program we have received aprons, teaching resources, kitchen mittens and a few utensils. We are very thankful for the opportunity to share these kitchen and garden experiences with the students.
