National Reconciliation Week - Year 8 Science

For this important week, we took our Science lesson outside to conduct our prayer around a Peppermint Gum that has long before the land was cleared for our College. Students crushed some of the tree's leaves and inhaled its beautiful fragrance, which is said to help calm the nervous system, relieving stress and anxiety, and promote restful sleep. Indigenous Australians also use the leaves to make tea. Collecting feathers, leaves and gumnuts, we made some creative masterpieces to display in the classroom for National Reconciliation Week.

"We are currently learning about Aboriginal properties and combining Art with Science. We collected leaves, gumnuts, sticks and more. Our next Science lesson, we came across an ancient Eucalyptus tree that has been used by the Aboriginal people who owned the land before the Europeans arrived. After collecting all our materials we went on to do leaf printing using paint to colour the leaf and make a shape on our paper. The results were fantastic. People really enjoyed this activity and used this opportunity to be creative." Neil S and Kiaan S

English Excellence

Year 7 Bentleigh East students are proud 'published' authors, with their picture books available at the campus Library and Resource Centre. As part of their English assessment, students had creative freedom with their stories, leaning on storytelling structures to create compelling narratives. While some chose to hand illustrate their books, others explored the world of AI to create their vision.

"We went from initial drafts with sizzling starts using onomatopoeia, to the editing process, where we found more descriptive words to create excitement or interest.

My story was about polar bears who were running out of ice, due to global warming, and had to find a new place to live. Writing the book was really fun for me." Liam M

"My book's message is not to judge a book by its cover. It's about an alien who wasn't welcomed because he was different to the others. It was really fun to create the characters names and I experimented with AI for my pictures. I found this helpful to make my images." Sam R

Math Magic

Year 7 students from Bentleigh East and Mentone Campuses joined forces for an exciting Math Games excursion at Bialik College. Our Math whizzes got to tackle challenging problems creatively, collaborate in teams with students from other schools, explore new concepts, and ignite their love of numbers.

The day kicked off with an inspiring talk from Dana Ma, Cambridge University student, who blends her passions for math and software engineering. This fueled the students' enthusiasm as they delved into the fascinating world of modular arithmetic. Our mathematicians put their knowledge and teamwork to the test in a friendly competition for prizes. Student Alex S says it was a great experience.

"I really loved Maths Games and all the fun activities and learning about modular arithmetic. My favourite was where we had to answer as many questions as possible in the time frame. My group didn’t end up winning but it was fun! We worked really well together and that really helped me with my learning in the whole event."

VCE Politics Excursion

Students in Unit 1/2 Politics class attended a Model United Nations excursion at Ivanhoe Grammar tell us about their experience.

"This excursion aimed to imitate the real experience of a delegate in the United Nations General Assembly. The day consisted of 26 countries with four student delegates representing each country. We all had the opportunity to voice our stance on the topic of Modern Slavery, and the proposed Draft Resolution.

Throughout the Assembly, representatives could propose possible amendments to the Draft Resolution and debate with others as to why their amendment was appropriate, or why others were not.

Furthermore, to have the amendment actually put into action, the Assembly would vote for it, with the aim of gaining a simple majority. The day got really heated when two countries, China and the USA went head-to-head on the topic of banning immigration. Several amendments were voted on, with some passing and some new clauses were added to the Resolution. The final Resolution passed the vote!

It was an enjoyable experience as we were able to be fully immersed and collaborative with our teammates and other schools."

Year 10 History Excursion

"On Friday 17 May, the Year 10 Elective History class had an excursion to the city to visit landmarks such as the Shrine of Remembrance, the State Library, the State Parliament, and the Old Treasury Building.

The Shrine of Remembrance was a key highlight of the day, where we were able to listen to a veteran - Barry - who talked about his experiences during the Vietnam War, as well as viewing and holding some items and photographs from the war.

At the State Library, we answered questions in the La Trobe Reading Room, saw Ned Kelly’s armour in the South Rotunda, observed some art pieces in the Cowen Gallery and learned about the ancient newspaper sources in the vaults beneath our feet

This excursion was a great experience for everyone and we learnt so much from the places we visited."

Brotherly Brilliance

Our students Cooper (Year 10) and Jasper F (Year 11) have been Go Karting with their dad since they were young. These days, they're competing in the Australian Karting Championship, placing on podiums and the experience has inspired Jasper to join this year's F1 in Schools program at St Bede's College.

"Karting has fuelled my passion for a career in motorsport, whether it be on the track racing, or behind scenes developing the car. From Karting together, Cooper and I have made so many new friends across the world, and we love the thrill of racing amongst the best in the country.

Racing is quite physical and requires lots of core body and neck strength, so lots of training helps to stay in shape. It also requires lots of mental endurance, as you have to bounce back from the setbacks and try to keep your chin up. Everyone should have a go in Karting, whether it's going down to your local hire track, or coming down to see the karts in action, everyone is welcome!"

Celebrating Student Achievements

Congratulations To Our Winning ACC Open Debating and Public Speaking Teams

A contingent from our Debating squad went to St Mary’s in St Kilda East to compete in the ACC Open Debating and Public Speaking competitions. After a range of prepared and impromptu speeches delivered, our College Public Speaking students achieved third place. Our Debating team were declared winners of all three of their debates, taking home the ACC Open Division 1 Premiership for 2024!

Public Speaking and Debating Captain, Liam Casey is thrilled with the result.

" I am filled with immense pride and happiness for our College at the ACC Debating Competition. Winning three debates and clinching the overall title is not just a testament to us as speakers, but also reflects the extensive support we have received. The first debate was challenging - our closest game - setting the tone for the competition. Our opponents were skilled and their arguments were well-structured and persuasive. We won by 2 points for the prepared section and moved onto the advised and secret topics. Winning both by 3 points, we are thrilled with how we prepared as a team and came out as champions."

Congratulations to our participants

Vocational Major Victories

As part of our VCE-VM program, Thomas W (Year 11) is completing his VET in Plumbing and participating in a weekly placement at a local plumbing business. Thomas' boss is delighted with his focussed performance, exceptional work ethic and attention to detail.

"Thomas is extremely punctual, and even initiates contact to check the time and location he's required at. Due to his skill level really exceeding that of a first year plumbing apprentice, Thomas is being given tasks that would exceed a regular work placement. I am able to give him instructions to complete unfamiliar plumbing tasks, to which he relishes! Thomas gets along well with other staff, even the builders enjoy having him onsite. I would be more than happy to have Thomas for the rest of the year on SWL placement!"

Football

Congratulations to Max M (Year 10) on his selection in the Under 16 Vic Metro team.

"I have always loved playing footy since I was in Auskick. I especially love playing footy with my mates in both ACC school footy and club footy. This year I have been lucky enough to be selected for the Under 16 Vic Metro team. This is a huge honour to be able to represent Victoria at this level of footy and I am very grateful for the opportunity."
