Level 1 & 2 Wonga Weekly

Week 9, Term 2

šŸ“š LITERACY

In Reading, we Ā be looking at Dreamtime stories ā€“ where they originate, why they are told and how they were traditionally told. In particular, we will be reading the story, 'How The Birds Got Their Colours'.

In Writing, we will continue using persuasive language and focussing on our word choice; using strong verbs and adjectives to help the reader connect to the idea.

In Phonics, we will be focusing on word endings (suffixes) and understanding how adding an 'ing' or an 'ed' to a base word can change it. For example, 'have' changes to 'having' (drop the 'e') and 'stop' changes to 'stopped' (add another 'p' before the 'ed').

Ā

What you can do at home

Investigate some Dreamtime stories. These can easily be found online .Ā

Here is a link to one to get you started. This is the story of Ā why the Blue Wren can't fly high.

šŸŽ² NUMERACY

This week we will continue our focus on how addition and subtraction are connected. Finding the missing number in equations will demonstrate how these operations can help each other out. Also considering the difference between two numbers helps us think about Ā the connections between addition and subtraction.

We will also explore concepts in shape; classifying, drawing and describing the features of 3D shapes.

Ā

What you can do at home:

Encourage your child to explore Maths Seeds (Gr 1) and Mathletics (Gr2) to help them practice simple mathematical concepts. Opportunities to practice fluency in numeracy will build skills that your child will use in the future.

You can find passwords for the above-mentioned programs inside the front cover Ā of your child's Reading Log.

Ā

šŸŒ„ CBL - Country

This week students will consider the importance of keeping our country healthy. Students will learn about land and water management, the implications of species introduction and the need to consider the impact of our environmental footprint on country.

Ā

ā€œWhen we care for Country, Country is strong and healthy. Then we are strong and healthy too.ā€ Ā Aunty Fay MuirĀ

THINGS TO CONSIDER

Thank you to those parents who have offered to volunteer in our 'Parent Helpers' program. After working through a few logistics, we are now hoping to start the program in Term Three.

Please note, that if you are hoping to participate in our 'Parent Helpers' program, you are required to attend our Parent Helpers Information session (date for next session tbc) and ensure you have completed the Child Safe training. Term Three dates for Child Safe training include Thursday 1st August and Monday 2nd September. Both sessions will be held online and you will find the links for these session on the Sentral Parent calendar.Ā

Ā

This week, students will be completing a range of assessments on their iPads. It is vital that students bring a fully charged iPad to school every day, to complete many of the tasks we plan for, including assessments. Please help remind your child to pack their fully charged iPad in their school bag every day. Thank you for your assistance with this.

Ā

It is important to let your childā€™s classroom teacher know of any problems/concerns that your child may share with you about their time at school.Ā Please alert the school (classroom teacher) about the problem as soon as possible, allowing school staff to work through it, rather than trying to solve it yourself or with other parents.
