Term 1 News from the Merri-bek North Education Plan

The Merri-bek North Education Plan involves Coburg High School, Glenroy College, John Fawkner College and Pascoe Vale Girls College working more closely together and with other partners.

In term 1 this year, our students have had a wonderful time learning with students from the other schools. See below for a snapshot of some of these activities.

Our Year 8 junior archaeologists

A group of lucky Year 8 students from the Merri-bek North schools went to Como House, South Yarra to learn all about being an archaeologist. They practiced surveying and participated in an archaeological dig finding plates, vases, cups and other treasures. Our students then asked some curly questions of a panel of archaeologists from the National Trust Australia. A week later, they worked in small groups with students from other schools to record a podcast about their experience at the STEM Centre of Excellence at the Science Gallery, University of Melbourne. What a fun experience! The students are looking forward to more opportunities in Terms 2- 4.

Team survival skills for our VCE Vocational Major students

All the Merri-bek North VCE Vocational Major students had a challenging and super fun day out at Glenroy College this term. Over 80 students worked in small teams. We tested our teamwork skills in a survival challenge against students from the other schools. This is helping our students develop their work-related skills in preparation for their future projects. The teachers are busy planning more joint activities across the schools for the coming terms – thanks to our students for their great suggestions.

VCE Sociology at Pascoe Vale Girls

Students from the Merri-bek North schools are attending Pascoe Vale Girls College every Wednesday afternoon to take VCE Sociology (Units 1 – 2 and Units 3 – 4). Sociology encourages you to become aware of and think critically about daily life and activities, as well as wider social issues. Our schools are working together to continue to offer a broader range of VCE and Vocational Education and Training (VET) subjects for all our students. If you want to study a VCE or VET subject in 2026, keep an eye out for more information in Terms 2 and 3.

Wellbeing and Inclusion

A positive learning environment is important for learning at our school. The Merri-bek North schools have been working together to continue to implement the School Wide Positive Behaviour Support program. Merri-bek North teachers and Department of Education staff have been sharing good practice and resources to enhance student wellbeing and academic success. Our students can tell you about what this looks like in our school.

Our school has also been working with an Inclusion Coach who works across all Merri-bek North schools to look at the kinds of adjustments that can help all students learn.
