Cooking

The Year 7/8 Cooking class on Monday afternoons have been honing their skills by preparing a variety of delicious breakfast dishes. From savoury muffins to poached pears and French toast, students have tested out a range of recipes that have expanded both their skill sets and their palettes. Along the way, students have developed their teamwork skills as they work together to wash and dry dishes and leave the kitchen tidy (you’re welcome, parents!). It has been a delight to see how students have grown in confidence and ability throughout the term!

In the Year 9 Hospitality major, students have been moving past simply following a recipe and learning the fundamental methods and processes of cooking.

To fulfil the theory component of their study, students have been completing a certificate in Food Safety Handling, and compiling notes on cooking methods such as frying, roasting, grilling, blanching and basting. This has then been practiced in practical activities: making stock from scratch to later use in a risotto, pickling vegetables and preparing glazes to baste over meats in cooking and most recently, blanching raw almonds to peel, dry and mill down, in order to make macarons with a ganache filling.

The students are building key skills that will enable them to work in hospitality fields and hopefully translate to excellent, multi course meals they can cook up for you at home.
