What's On In 5/6

Literacy:
What a great start to the Grade 5/6s persuasive writing we have had. The 5/6s have used TEEL paragraph structure in their persuasive writing, using persuasive devices and learning the differences between formal and informal language. They have been able to transform informal to formal language. One of our favourite persuasive activities was becoming real estate agents and writing persuasive advertisements.
What does TEEL mean?
T: Topic Sentence
E: Evidence
E: Explanation
L: Linking Sentence
Thanks to the teachers' help, the students have done an outstanding job in their Literacy lessons.
Maths:
Grades 5/6 have also had an amazing start in fractions, decimals, percentages, and converting measurements. We have been focusing on how we can convert measurements by dividing and multiplying by 10’s,100’s and 1,000’s. We have been using a mnemonic strategy to remember our metric units called ‘King Henry Doesn’t Usually Drink Chocolate Milk’, which stands for Kilo, Hecto, Deca, Unit, Deci, Centi, and Milli. We have also been learning the place value of decimals, ordering and comparing them, and how fractions, decimals, and percentages can be equivalent and converted between them.
Some activities we enjoyed were concept cartoons, maths museums, counter fractions, decimals and percentages, length conversions, capacity conversions, etc. It is wonderful to see all the progress we have made in converting all the measurements we have learned about and learning about fractions, decimals and percentages.
