On Wednesday, students at St Louis' celebrated Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent.
Fr Andrew led us in prayer and reminded us the importance of making an effort to be the best person we can be, especially during Lent. Some students promised to help more at home, some promised to not fight with their siblings, some promised to give money to the poor. Whatever our promises are this Lent, we are called to try and be a better person after Lent than we were before. It shouldn't be a sacrifice that just lasts for 40 days but one that is long lasting and brings us closer to God through our thoughts and actions.
Lent is a time for us to turn back to God. It is a time to reflect on the choices we make and the way we live our lives, to seek forgiveness for where we have gone wrong, and to draw closer to God. It is a time to pray, to fast, and to share what we have with others.
In this Jubilee Year, the call to renew our faith and live differently is even stronger. The Church has dedicated a whole year to considering how we can start anew and restore the balance in our society, so that all people may flourish. It can be tricky to know where to begin, and all too easy to put things off. Perhaps it will be easier in an hour, a day, or a week’s time? But as St Paul reminds the Corinthians: “Now is the favourable time.”So, let us commit to not putting off until tomorrow what we can do today. In the knowledge of God’s love and mercy, we open our hearts this Lent to be transformed in prayer and inspired to take action. We know that a better world needs all of us, and we seek to play our part.
