The Power of Provocations in the IB PYP Classroom

In an IB PYP classroom, provocations play a vital role in sparking curiosity and encouraging student inquiry. They are designed to engage students’ thinking, stimulate their natural curiosity, and challenge their existing knowledge and assumptions. By igniting a sense of wonder and inviting students to investigate complex concepts, provocations help build a collaborative, inquiry-driven learning environment where students take ownership of their learning journey.

Our first provocation was in the BB auditorium. Some of our teachers performed for us. The most engaging performances were the ones that had lots of expression and made us think and reflect in creative ways. We noticed that when the presentation has rhythm, it makes us feel happy. We learnt that confidence and eye contact are also important when you are connecting to an audience. – Andie and Vihaan (5C)

Year 4 Incursion: Democracy, Community and Me

Year 4 students recently took part in the Democracy, Community and Me incursion, an exciting provocation that sparked their curiosity and deepened their understanding of democracy. This hands-on experience engaged students in learning about the role of local government and how rules and laws shape societies. Students actively participated in a mock election, learning about preferential voting and absolute majorities, before role-playing a local government council meeting. As Councillors and residents, they debated and contributed to the creation of local laws, reflecting on how people can take action to enhance their communities. This incursion was a fantastic way to ignite their curiosity and inspire further exploration of these important concepts.
