As we move through the school year, I want to take a moment to emphasise the significant impact that being in the classroom has on student learning, development, and wellbeing.
A study by the Australian Government’s Department of Education found that students who miss 10 days of school per term (equivalent to just two days per fortnight) end up missing nearly a full year of learning by the time they reach Year 10. Furthermore, research from the Victorian Department of Education shows that even small amounts of absenteeism can affect a student’s academic progress, engagement with school, and future opportunities.
Beyond academics, regular attendance fosters relationships, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Our classrooms are more than just spaces for learning; they are places where students grow spiritually, socially, and emotionally. In the book of Hebrews, we are reminded:
"And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another."
Hebrews 10:24-25
As a school community, we value the partnership between home and school in ensuring that students make the most of their educational opportunities. Of course, we understand that illness and unforeseen circumstances arise, and we always prioritise student wellbeing. However, where possible, we encourage families to reinforce the habit of regular attendance and the importance of being present.
Thank you for your ongoing support in making our classrooms places of rich learning, faith, and connection. If you have any concerns about attendance or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
