ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY

Milgate Primary School would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land of the Wurundjeri People and we would like to pay our respects to the elders both past and present. Staff, students and the school community understand that we thrive, learn and live on Wurundjeri Country and we stand with all cultures united as one.

YEAR 6 | MILGATE CITY MARATHON

This week, Year 6 students took on the Melbourne CBD, putting their teamwork and navigation skills to the test. Using maps and timetables, they tackled transport challenges in small groups, guided by teachers and parent volunteers. Their planning paid off as they confidently navigated the city before meeting back at Federation Square.

A highlight of the day was earning points by capturing photos of iconic Melbourne landmarks, adding a fun and competitive element to the experience. Their enthusiasm was evident as they explored the city, ticking off locations and celebrating each successful stop. It was a fantastic way to apply their learning in a real-world setting while making lasting memories!

YEAR 1 | VISIT FROM THE POLICE AND VET

This week, our Year 1 students had an exciting incursion as part of our How We Organise Ourselves unit, exploring who in the community helps us.

We had special visits from the police, vet, and ambulance, who shared their roles in supporting our community. Students were inquirers, asking thoughtful questions and learning more about the important contributions of these community members.

Through this experience, students identified different community members, their responsibilities, and how they support and connect people in our society. This incursion helped bring our learning to life and deepened our understanding of the importance of working together as a community.

A big thank you to our wonderful visitors for inspiring the next generation of community helpers!

CELEBRATING FIRST NATIONS CULTURE, HISTORIES AND PEOPLE - CALENDAR

WELCOME TO COUNTRY CEREMONY

On Friday 7th of March we will be hosting a Welcome to Country and Smoking ceremony, conducted by Uncle Colin Hunter Junior. Both of these events are integral to the culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

A Welcome to Country is delivered by Traditional Owners to welcome visitors to their country. A Smoking ceremony is conducted with the smoke signifying a means to cleanse the area and people of bad spirits and protect visitors.

NEW STAFF INDUCTION

At Milgate Primary School, we take great pride in our thorough and supportive induction process for new staff. This ensures that every educator who joins our team is well-prepared to uphold our philosophy and approach to teaching and learning.

On Monday, our Leading Teachers led the Induction Day, guiding new staff through our core values, teaching frameworks, and strategies to ensure every child is extended and challenged. Through collaborative discussions and hands-on learning, our newest team members gained valuable insights into how we create an engaging and inclusive learning environment.

We are excited to see the positive impact our new staff will have on student learning and look forward to working together to support every child in reaching their full potential.

FUN RUN UPDATE

We have already raised an incredible $6,912.70 for our Fun Run—what an amazing effort from our community! Our goal is to raise enough money for a new playground and cubby houses, creating even more exciting and engaging play spaces for our students. Keep up the fantastic fundraising so we can continue to enhance our school’s outdoor areas!

CHANGES TO MATHEMATICS REPORTING IN 2025

The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) recently published its revised mathematics curriculum (Mathematics curriculum 2.0).

All Victorian government schools will start using the Mathematics curriculum 2.0 in 2024 or 2025. At Milgate Primary School we are using the revised mathematics curriculum for school reporting from Semester 1 2025.

On your child's previous report, the teacher reported against the 3 strands of the achievement standard for mathematics (Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability). Under the Mathematics curriculum 2.0, your child’s teacher will report against the achievement standard as a whole, providing a single, aggregated score.

As the achievement standards reported on have changed, the first time you receive a report under the Mathematics 2.0 curriculum, it will only show achievement and not progress. For all reports after this, progress will be shown against the single achievement standard.

The VCAA made these changes to help teachers plan their teaching and learning programs in mathematics, giving them more flexibility to support students to link ideas within mathematics and also with other curriculum areas.
