Bears in O2

This term, our topic focus has been all about Bears, inspired by our class name—the 02 Bears! We have been learning to recognise and name different types of Bears, understand 'where they live' and discover 'what they like to eat'. We have listened to engaging stories about bears and enjoyed hands-on activities, using our senses. Our favourite activities so far have been making Brown Bears and Polar Bears using craft materials. The students have shown wonderful creativity and you can see their amazing Bear creations on our Bear wall and below. This integrated topic has made learning about bears both meaningful and fun for everyone!

Maths

This term in Maths, we have been learning all about 'patterns'. Students have explored different kinds of patterns focusing on repeating patterns. Through various activities, students have practised identifying, describing and creating their own patterns using materials and drawings. Our favourite activity so far has been making Pattern Caterpillars, where everyone got creative and built their own unique repeating caterpillar using colours and circle shapes. This learning links directly to the Year 1 Mathematics section of the new South Australian Curriculum, which emphasises 'recognising, describing and continuing patterns with objects and drawings'. Next, we will explore growing patterns and shape patterns.

The Lunar New Year in B2

Lunar New Year began on the 17th of February. New Year’s Eve celebrations began on the evening of the 16th. It is a special celebration full of traditions, family time and delicious food.

While it is the most important holiday in China, it’s also celebrated in Korea, Vietnam and other countries too.

The Lunar New Year is a time for celebrating and greeting the arrival of spring and the new year. The 15-day celebration begins with the new moon and lasts until the full moon, finishing with a lantern festival.

This year is a special year as it is the Year of the Fire Horse.

We watched some videos of the dragon and lion dances. We also made some lanterns. Each student also received a lucky red envelope.

Y2's Chinese New Year celebrations

Y2 has been learning all about Chinese New Year. The students enjoyed discovering how this special festival is celebrated, especially by taking part as lion dancers and drummers!

We have also been practising our cutting skills by decorating our classroom windows with bright paper cuts. Another highlight was writing the character '福' (Fu), which means good luck and happiness for the New Year.

Indonesian

Our students have been learning about religious and cultural celebrations in Indonesia, home to the world’s largest Muslim population. As Muslims around the globe begin the holy month of Ramadan, students explored its significance through creative art activities. Junior primary students created crescent moons and stars, learning how the Islamic lunar calendar determines the start of Ramadan and why the sighting of the new moon is important. Upper primary students designed paper mosques inspired by Islamic architecture, including famous landmarks such as Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta, and explored features such as domes, minarets, arches and prayer halls. We wish all our families a joyful and peaceful Ramadan Mubarak as they celebrate this special occasion together.

Wellbeing:

This term, we are focusing on increasing pro-social opportunities during lunch and recess, supporting students to build positive social and emotional skills during break times.

Our G6 space has reopened, offering calm and quiet activities for students who need a more regulated environment.

Year 6 students are successfully running a Book Club under the tree near the Yellow Unit, creating a welcoming space to read and connect. If you have any pre-loved books you would like to donate, we would greatly appreciate them.

G1 students are also leading an Art Club under the gazebo, modelling kindness, responsibility and inclusion. Well done to our student leaders for creating such positive spaces for others.

ART CLUB 🎨

At lunch and recess, some wonderful student leaders in G1 have been sharing their talents and love of creativity by running an 'Art Club.' They have demonstrated fantastic inclusion and kindness as they create and connect with their peers.
