What is NAPLAN? - Information for Parents
NAPLAN (National Assessment Program, Literacy and Numeracy) is an annual national assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It provides schools, families, and education systems with a snapshot of how students are progressing in essential literacy and numeracy skills that form the foundation for future learning.
Students complete short online assessments in:
Writing
Reading
Conventions of Language (spelling, grammar and punctuation)
Numeracy
NAPLAN is not a pass-or-fail test. Instead, it helps identify strengths, areas for growth, and longer-term trends in learning progress. Teachers use this information alongside classroom assessments to support future planning and instruction.
At St. Helena’s we encourage students to approach NAPLAN confidently and calmly. It is simply one moment in time that gives us useful information, but it does not define a child’s overall ability, potential, or character.
How You Can Support Your Child at Home During NAPLAN
Here are some simple, practical ways families can help children feel settled and confident during the assessment period:
1. Keep routines calm and predictable
A consistent bedtime, healthy meals, and regular routines help students feel grounded and ready to learn.
2. Encourage a positive mindset
Remind children that NAPLAN is just one way to show what they know, and that trying their best is what really matters.
3. Avoid adding pressure
Reassure your child that NAPLAN is not something to stress about. Encourage them but keep home conversations light and low‑key.
4. Provide opportunities for everyday literacy and numeracy
Simple activities help build confidence, such as:
Reading together
Playing number games
Talking through everyday maths (shopping, cooking, measuring)
5. Make mornings smooth
On assessment days, aim for:
A good night’s sleep
A healthy breakfast
Arriving at school on time
This helps students feel settled before they begin.
6. Encourage breaks and relaxation after school.
7. Ensure your child’s devices for NAPLAN are charged and they have brought them to school (if applicable).
NAPLAN days can be mentally tiring. Allow time for play, rest, and fun.
Working together helps ensure NAPLAN is a positive, low-stress experience for our students.
