A Reflection on Recent Events

Last Thursday we held the Swimming Carnival at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre for Years 7 to 12. It is something we do well here at the College as across the day there are events for everyone. Students can be competitive through the championship events as well as by just getting active by participating in non-competitive races as well as novelty events. Our Senior students led the way by being involved in as many events as they could, encouraging the young students and leading the war cries. Seeing the students rally together and celebrating each other’s achievements in and out of the pool was a truly special experience.

Unfortunately, the day was marred by disappointment when vandalism was discovered in several bathrooms. This behaviour undermines the sense of community we strive to build and leaves a negative impact for all who share our facilities. Such actions do not reflect the values we uphold at St Patrick’s College.

In recent weeks, there have also been complaints from members of the public regarding poor student behaviour on public transport. Reports have highlighted unsafe actions and inappropriate comments, which not only risk the safety of our students but also damage the reputation of our College. These incidents include students sitting on the platform of the train station with their legs dangling over the ledge on the tracks as well as blocking platforms so other members of the public cannot get through. On buses we have had students not standing up for members of the public, swinging off railings and being rude to bus drivers who are simply trying to do their job. In public spaces including Burwood Park and Westfield Burwood, we have had students making inappropriate comments towards girls and swearing in public. All these issues have been reported to me just in the last three weeks. These issues are serious and need to be addressed promptly.

It is essential that we work together, staff, students, and parents/carers to reinforce accountability and ensure our values are clearly communicated. I need every parent and carer to have a conversation with their son tonight. I need you to reinforce with your sons the values that you have raised them with that align to the College, so we are working collaboratively. We will continue to work with the students at school. We need to remind them about showing integrity and doing the right thing when you and I are not around. By collaborating and maintaining open lines of communication, we can help our students - your sons - make better choices and foster a respectful, supportive environment both within the College and out in the wider community.
