Built on Strong Foundations
Last Thursday’s Secondary Swimming Carnival was a lot of fun. You may be surprised by the number of schools that no longer run a full swimming carnival – likely shocked if I named a few.
The colour, noise, and energy of House spirit were unmistakenly SPC. Year 12 led from the front in participation and tone. There was enthusiasm across all year groups, some fierce competition and plenty of fun between the lanes and in the novelty pool.
These events are so important. Strong cultures are built on, and by, events that can easily be taken for granted. If focus begins to shift towards performance or outcomes when deciding how best to spend time during the academic year, opportunities to celebrate tradition and develop community diminish.
My thanks to Mr Tim Donlan for his organisation and leadership in his first carnival as Head of Sport, to Mr Brett Davidson for his support behind the scenes, to Mr Steve Fochesato for his steady and controlled announcing across a long day, and to our House Prefects who modelled maturity and school pride in how they led their Houses.
Everything that was expressed during the carnival was not accidental. It reflected foundations that have been laid over time through consistent effort and commitment to the College.
In the Gospel of Matthew, it is said:
‘Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.’ (Matthew 7:24)
Co-Curricular at St Patrick’s College seeks to build on rock – on character that develops over many experiences and becomes part of the legacy our boys pass down to others.
As public speaking begins, as Debating trials commence, and as sport teams prepare for semi-finals, the encouragement is the same: build well.
‘Moments are important, but foundations are what sustain them.’
