3/4 Science Day

The Year 3/4 students had an exciting day last week exploring science through hands-on experiments during their recent incursion! Divided into mixed groups, they tackled two fascinating activities: creating Oobleck, a non-Newtonian fluid, and experimenting with the Fizz Inflator, where they observed chemical reactions in action. The fun continued with a "Mad About Science" session, where students were amazed by the dramatic effects of dry ice, learning about its properties and creating cool, smoky bubbles. It was a day full of discovery, creativity, and scientific wonder!

3/4W

Chris: "It was interesting to see how cornflour and water mixes to make oobleck. Also that when dry ice is mixed with boiling water it makes water vapour."

Grace: "I liked science day because we made big bubbles and we made oobleck."

Jasmine: "I liked science day because it was fun to use dry ice, which was up to -70 degrees. It was also fun to make oobleck which when you punch it, it’s hard but when you touch it, it's like a liquid."

Xavier: "I liked science day because we made oobleck and we used dry ice to make bubbles we got to hold."

Evan: "I liked science day because we learnt experiments like oobleck and dry ice. When you mix dry ice and hot water it makes bubbles which was fun to see."

Jayden V: "I liked the fizz inflator because the balloon looked like it was going to pop."

3/4H

Alexander: "It was a great experience. The Mad About Science was cool because we learnt many new things about science. We made oobleck which was a fun activity. We discovered that when you don’t apply pressure to it, it will be a liquid but when you apply pressure it will become solid. We also put vinegar into a bottle and poured some baking soda in a balloon. We then put the balloon on top of the bottle, tipped it up and watched it blow up. This was one of my favourite science incursions ever!"

Hayden: "It was the most awesome day throughout the year so far! The mad about science incursion was one of my favourites. It was super exciting and fascinating because we saw dry ice in action! They put water and dry ice into a beaker which made this misty steam, the steam is caused by the dry ice sublimating (when a solid turns straight into a gas) at a fast rate and we even got to get a feel of the steam it was so cool! I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!!!!"

Amelia: "It was amazing and we did so many cool experiments! My favorite part of the day was when ‘mad about science’ came, and we could do experiments with a beaker, a lit candle and dried ice. IT WAS THE BEST INCURSION EVER!!!"

Emily: "It was an amazing experience. We make oobleck which is a solid when you put pressure on it, and a liquid when you don’t. The dry ice was fun but I learnt that it can burn you.  The day was one of the MOST MAGNIFICENT INCURSION  EVER! Even a scientist came in and he told us about  matter and there are solids, liquids, gases, plasmas and Bose-Einstein condensates."

Dominic: "This has to be the best science experiment I have done, First was learning about the states of matter: Solid liquid and gas, the difference is on how many atoms are in the matter. After we were learning about dry ice, we learnt how to put dry ice with washing detergent and boiling water. It makes bubbles and if you pop them, it makes gas. With Oobleck we found out that if you put force on it,  it becomes hard but if you leave it, it then turns it into a liquid."

3/4TG

Noah: “My favourite part was making the oobleck when it changed into a solid when I put pressure on it.”

Valentina: “I learned that you can make oobleck and it turns into a liquid when you let it sink through your hands.”

Elaria: “My favourite part was when we made the fizz inflator because it was fun when the baking soda and vinegar caused a gas.”

Elise: “One of the parts I really liked was when we held giant nitrogen bubbles, because once you popped the bubbles, it looked like smoke.”

Sanuli: “My favourite part was when we held a giant bubble in our hands.”

3/4C

Evie: “We used dry ice and we got to feel what a cloud would feel like.”

Nyapaar: “On Science Day we did lots of experiments and we got to make oobleck. We also got to create and hold a bubble with soap and dry ice.”

Esther: “I got to see dry ice for the first time. I loved all the experiments that we did. I was most excited to make the oobleck because it was a slime. Oobleck is a solid and a liquid.”

Dinara: “Science Day was so much fun! I liked seeing the plasma ball. I got to be in a group with the other 3/4s and we learnt about solids, liquids and gases.”

Jacob: “Chris and I did the fizz inflator experiment together. We used vinegar and bi carb soda and put it in a bottle. We then put a balloon on top and it inflated. It inflated because the vinegar and bi carb had a reaction and made the balloon big, filling with gas.”

Penny: “When you add dry ice to hot water it made a cloud. Then when we added detergent and more dry ice and it created lots of bubbles that overflowed out of the beaker.”

Isla: “We learnt about lots of new things such that the closest black hole is in the Milky Way. My favourite experiment was the bubble and dry ice experiment.”

3/4LS

Lucas: “It was fun and I got to hold a bubble during the ‘Mad about Science’ incursion.”

Leo: “I liked the oobleck and I punched it.”

Zoe: “I liked oobleck.”

Marcus: “I loved the oobleck and the fizz inflator because it looked so cool when we turned it upside down and it made a balloon.”

Ajooni: “It was fun with the oobleck because it was a non-Newtonian fluid.”

Bella: “I liked the fizz inflator because it was very funny.”

Julie: “I liked the oobleck because it was fun but it exploded in my tub.”
