Assistant Principal's Report

Dear Parents and Carers,

The Stand Up Project (SUP)

To support the whole school initiative, The Stand Up Project, our Year 5 SUP leaders have been busily preparing posters and running workshops with our Year 3 and 4 students. The SUP promotes students being an upstander. Upstanders can actively change situations in motion and in effect – outcomes and lives. The Stand Up Project is a student leadership and empowerment program that reduces discrimination, harassment and bullying through student-designed and delivered Upstander Training. The program prioritises student voice, agency and leadership.

Burwood East Primary School focuses on four key intervention strategies known as the ‘4D’s’. This includes direct, delegate, distract and delay. Our aim is to equip our students and the wider community with the knowledge and skills to connect in ways that foster harmony, understanding and respect. It has been encouraging to hear our students using the language of ‘friendship fire’ when small conflicts occur and then use our values of respect and resilience to solve these small issues.

To support this initiative further, we have a URStrong incursion for students in Year 3 and 4 next week, focusing on friendship skills and strategies to support when faced with a Friendship Fire. The Year 3/4 workshop is called the Heart of Friendship and incorporates skill building and role playing for students to practise what they can do when faced with a Friendship Fire. We look forward to hearing feedback from the students about this incursion.

BEPS Policies

This year many policies have been updated and reviewed by our school council members. These policies are documents made available to the school community as a means to clarify functions and responsibilities, manage change, promote consistency, meet standards and make decision-making transparent. You can find our policies on our website.

A new policy has been added in relation to Dogs at School. Whilst Burwood East Primary School understands that many families in our school community keep dogs as pets, to ensure that our school remains a safe and inclusive place for everyone, we have in place a number of rules that we expect all families to follow if they wish to bring their pet dog onto school grounds:

  • pet dogs must be leashed at all times and in the control of a responsible adult
  • pet dogs must not be tied up on school grounds or left unaccompanied
  • families that bring dogs to school that exhibit signs of aggressive behaviour, bark, or jump may be asked to leave.

We look forward to working with our families to ensure everyone’s safety.

Reports

Our staff have been busily assessing and reporting on your child’s learning, effort, behaviour, and personal and social capabilities. Our school reports are scheduled to be released to families on Wednesday 18th of December. This semester you will notice some changes to the report format. These changes support the introduction of The Victorian Curriculum Maths 2.0 and English 2.0 in 2025. The changes include the addition of a five point scale for a number of English and Maths skills. The small number of skills listed highlight some of the skills covered in these learning areas, with the overall progression point capturing your child’s capability in that learning area. Please note, this five point scale replaces the English and Maths narrative comments.

We strongly recommend parents/carers read their child’s report and focus on your child’s achievements throughout the year. We are extremely proud of what our students have achieved academically, socially and emotionally. If you have any questions regarding your child’s report, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.

Supervision in the Yard

This is a friendly reminder that our school yard is supervised before school from 8:45am and after school until 3:45pm. Please ensure drop off and pick up is occurring during these times to ensure student safety. If your child has not been picked up by 3:45pm they will need to attend Team Kids. Registration is free at Team Kids.

John Monash Little Scientist

On Monday evening Luke, Harrison and I had the pleasure of attending the John Monash School to see our Year 4 students Eleanor, Carys, George, Violet, Ethan, Teddy and Emma showcase their scientific research. The students presented their research projects in great depth and answered many questions from patrons in attendance. John Monash School also had Year 10, 11 and 12 students presenting their research projects through interactive stalls and presentations. The evening highlighted various STEM innovations and ideas. Well done to our Year 4 students (including Coco, who was a part of the research project) and many thanks to their parents for attending too.

Take care,

Teri and Edwina
