ES Staff in the Spotlight

Of our 186 staff at Wantirna College, we have 111 teaching staff and 75 education support staff (ES). Primarily the role of our ES is to support teachers and students to achieve the best possible educational outcomes for students. Their jobs vary greatly, with some providing direct support to students in the classroom and some focused on maintaining our beautiful grounds and buildings, whilst others are in the General Office ensuring payments for camps, excursions and programs are processed accordingly.

Our school couldn’t operate without the valuable work they do which is often not as visible as the work our teachers do.  However, it is just as vital in ensuring we provide the best possible opportunities for our students. This term, our Staff in the Spotlight will shine a light on the valuable work our ES do and the people in these roles who support our students and teachers.

This week we are spotlighting Lisa Jones.

Lisa has joined the Connect team this year and supports students in the development of social and emotional skills through community-based learning projects. We’ve loved the ideas and enthusiasm Lisa has brought to the role and the meaningful relationships she builds with students to help them engage with school and their learning in a positive way.

What is your role?

Acting Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Co-ordinator.

How long have you worked at Wantirna College?

I started here in January of this year.

Briefly describe your role and responsibilities.

As the Acting SEL Coordinator for the Connect Program, my role is to promote the emotional and social well-being of students by guiding them through hands-on learning activities. Together with the other Connect Facilitators, I lead interactive lessons that help students develop essential skills like emotional regulation, empathy, communication, and conflict resolution. We also support teachers in assisting students in the classroom to enhance their students’ social and emotional growth. A key part of my role is working closely with families, the Wantirna College leadership team, and the broader community to ensure the program is effective and provides strong support for all involved.

How does the work you do support students and/or teachers?

My work as the Acting SEL Coordinator helps students by teaching them key social-emotional skills like emotional regulation, empathy, and communication, which support their personal growth and building positive relationships. For teachers, we provide tools and strategies to integrate SEL into the classroom, improving student behaviour, engagement, and overall learning. The support given helps to creates a positive, supportive environment for both students and teachers to thrive.

What is the best thing about Wantirna College?

The best thing about Wantirna College is its strong focus on fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment. The school offers a range of programs that cater to diverse student needs. Whether through its engaging curriculum, commitment to student well-being, or strong sense of community, Wantirna College provides students with opportunities to grow, thrive, and prepare for the future.

What is the most challenging aspect of your role?

The most challenging aspect of my role is managing days when multiple situations arise, which can lead to exceptionally busy circumstances. The wellbeing team is fantastic and we support each other effectively, but occasionally finding time for a lunch break can be difficult.

If you hosted a dinner party and had to invite 3 Wantirna teachers, who would they be and why?

If I hosted a dinner party and had to invite three Wantirna staff members, I’d have to adjust my list to at least four! I’d definitely include Courtney Moran and Kylie Rackham, since we had so much fun on our road trip to Ballarat. I’d also invite Kate Shannon, who always makes me laugh, and Deanna Poon, because she has a real talent for bringing people together and creating a warm, friendly atmosphere.

If you were the boss of Wantirna College and had an unlimited budget to spend, what would you spend it on and why?

If I were the boss of Wantirna College with an unlimited budget, I’d expand the Connect Crew program with bigger spaces, more equipment, and funding for larger projects. This would provide additional resources to support students' well-being and create a more personalised approach for all.

What’s your ideal holiday destination?

My ideal holiday destination is Italy, with its beautiful scenery, amazing food, and perfect summer vibe.
