Year Three - Spotlight on Learning
Dear Families,
Remembrance Day was celebrated by the Years 3 - 6 students last Monday 11th November at 10:30am, on the basketball courts. All communities presented a poppy wreath as part of the Prayer Liturgy. Students did an excellent job in showing respect and reverence for our fallen soldiers in all wars.
LEST WE FORGET
Students from 3-6 will be participating in the Year 3 - 6 Athletics Day at Casey Fields on Monday 18th November. Students will need to wear their sports uniform and school hat, and a t-shirt of their house colour if they have one - otherwise their sports t-shirt will be okay, as children will be wearing wrist bands in their house colours anyway. They will need their water bottles and fruit / snack and lunch all put in a small labelled bag. Students will have scheduled breaks to eat in between events. They should also bring sunscreen and sanitiser. Students will be leaving school between 9:00 and 9:30am, ready for a 9:45am start, and returning to school between 2:30 and 3:00pm. They will be sitting in the grandstand, in their house colours - for example all Grade 3 Red House will be sitting together, all Grade 3 Green House will be sitting together, and so on.
All parents are most welcome to attend Casey Fields to cheer their children on - part of the Grand Stand will be allocated for parent seating. At the end of the event, teachers will line up on the field with their classes. If parents wish to take their child home after the Athletics is finished, you will need to go to this area and let your child’s class teacher know - teachers will highlight them on the class list, and write the time students were taken. Teachers will then give students who are leaving a pink sticker to wear, to acknowledge that they are going home with their parents. The pink sticker is a visual for whomever is at the gate that no child leaves unless they have this sticker. Parents will need to sign their child out on PAM as soon as they can.
Our Learning Focus for this week, Week 6 . . .
Mathematics: In Maths we have started learning about Probability and Chance. Students began by identifying certain and impossible chance events, numbering these on a Probability Continuum. These were followed by identifying chance events that were likely, equally likely or unlikely to occur. To explore these further students conducted some chance experiments.
English: In Writing over the last few weeks, students have been planning and writing a persuasive letter about why animals should be banned in circuses. This week students completed their planning and writing by creating a conclusion to their letter. Students were able to use their note taking skills to add information, persuasive points, explanations and proof in their paragraphs. In Reading, students have reviewed apostrophes of possession and pronouns.
Religious Education: Students have used a Bible timeline to place some of the important events they have learnt about in Religion so far this term. Students also practised for our combined Ephesus / Bethany Community Mass, which will be held in Week 7, Wednesday 20th November at 9:30am at St Thomas the Apostle Church. The Gospel reading for this Mass is John 15: 1-5. Students explored and discussed some of the symbols used in this reading of ‘Jesus the True Vine’ to get a deeper understanding of the message of this scripture.
Integrated Studies / Music: Students continued to participate in the Amplify Music Programme. In Lesson 4 students learned what the word ‘tuned’ meant, and then identified some tuned percussion instruments such as glockenspiels or xylophones. In Lesson 5, students identified the chorus in a song, and what common cues are associated with a chorus.
Auslan: In Auslan, students are up to Lesson 8B where they learnt that signed stories visually describe events. Students were able to describe pictures to make a signed story, retrieving the sign for fish and the 7A colour signs.
