Supporting Student Success Through Personal Learning Plans and Parent Support Group Meetings
At St Thomas the Apostle PS, we are committed to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to succeed and thrive. This commitment is reflected in our Personal Learning Plans (PLPs) created for our students with additional needs. These are designed to cater to the unique strengths, needs, and goals of each student. PLPs are especially beneficial as a tool in supporting our students to enter the learning, be engaged, motivated and empowered in their learning.
A PLP is a collaborative plan created by teachers, students, and their families. It sets out specific learning goals, tailored strategies, adjustments and steps for tracking progress. Teachers work closely with students to identify academic strengths and areas for improvement, setting achievable goals and timelines to foster growth. Parents and guardians play a vital role, too—by being involved in the PLP process, they gain insights into their child’s learning journey and can reinforce these goals at home.
To further support families, our school offers regular Parent Support Group meetings. These sessions provide a welcoming space for parents and caregivers of students with additional learning needs. Led by our school’s Learning Adjustment team, these meetings cover a range of areas, including effective learning strategies, short term goals in curriculum domains and how to navigate school structures and processes. Parents can ask questions, share experiences, and connect with all stakeholders involved in supporting their child’s education.
This term our PSGs are taking place over the next two weeks (Nov 18th -28th). All families involved in this process have received an email to book a time to speak with the classroom teacher and the Learning Adjustment team.
Our goal is to build a network of support around each child, empowering parents with tools, resources, and a supportive community. Together, PLPs and Parent Support Group meetings help ensure that all students have the opportunity to reach their fullest potential.

We continue to share in the partnership between home and school for our children.
