Year Six - Spotlight on Learning
Dear Families,
In Week 6, our Year 6 students experienced a wonderful mix of learning activities and new challenges. A highlight was their visit to St. Peter’s High School for Transition Day, where they got a feel for what high school life will be like. They explored new subjects, engaged in hands-on activities, and met some of the teachers. It was an exciting opportunity that helped them feel more prepared and confident for the transition to Year 7!
Mathematics:
In Maths, we focused on building mental calculation strategies to solve problems. Students practiced various approaches for quick, efficient problem-solving, strengthening their confidence and mathematical skills.
How you can help at home:
Encourage your child to practice mental math by asking quick questions during daily activities, like estimating grocery totals or finding price differences on sale items.
English:
We continued reading our class novel, Can You See Me?, exploring Chapters 17-20. These chapters deepen students’ understanding of themes and characters, fostering empathy and awareness of different perspectives and personal experiences.
In writing, students expanded their vocabulary by incorporating new words from Can You See Me? into their own work. They practiced using connectives of addition (e.g., also, furthermore) and cause/effect (e.g., since, therefore) to enhance their persuasive letters on therapy dogs, finishing with strong conclusions.
How you can help at home:
Ask questions about the story to encourage your child’s understanding and connection with the characters.
Religious Education:
We continued our study of Mary as a disciple, focusing on key moments in her life that demonstrate qualities like courage, trust, and faith. Students reflected on how they might apply these qualities in their own lives.
AUSLAN:
In Auslan, students learned to represent various zoo animals using constructed action, making the language learning process interactive and fun.
SEL:
Our SEL topic this week was trust and courage. Through discussions and role-playing, students identified trusted people in their lives and practiced asking for help when needed, building resilience and confidence in seeking support.
Integrated Studies:
Students explored different music genres, examining instrumentation and tone color to discover what makes each genre unique and how different instruments contribute to each genre’s sound.
