Grade 2

Term 3

We have had a busy and exciting term filled with learning and special events! We celebrated Book Week with a colourful parade, enjoyed The Blurbs performance, and even made our own ice cream in a bag. Students loved welcoming their Special Person to school, shopping at the Father’s Day Stall, and meeting our wonderful pre-service teacher, Ms Toman. In science, we explored energy through our “Dancing Currents” experiment, and we also shared our progress and achievements during the Student Learning Conferences. It has been a fantastic term of fun, learning, and new experiences!

What books did we read this term?

This term we read The 27th Annual African Hippopotamus Race, The Stone Lion, How to Move a Zoo, Everything You Yver Wanted to Know About the Tooth Fairy, One Little Dung Beetle and The True Story About the 3 Little Pigs.

How to move a zoo was my favourite because when the elephant went on the boat it was weird because elephants don't go on boats!

- Finley

The Hippopotamus Race was my favourite beacuse Sebastian's underwhere fell off and he had to hide for the hole night away from everyone!

- Koby

What writing activities did we do this term?

We did lots of book reviews. These are when you give a book a rating and what our favourite parts are. We also made a bus of our own because Edward the hippopotamus went to his big race in a bus that they turned into a house.

We wrote our own version of The Stone Lion:

I wrote mine about that there was statue mad of glass and it was about a half as tall a a skyscraper and some people where mean to it and had a night mare and the statue came to life in the world and the world ended.

- Koby

I wrote mine about that there was a statue mad of diamond it was about a half as  tall as the empire state building.

- Finley

What was your favourite writing activity?

My favourite activity was when we made our own bus because i got to pick what it smells like, sounds like and looks like and feels like and we all got to draw a picture of our bus.

- Koby

My favourite writing activity was creating my own bus because it had a ga ga pit.

- Finley

What class novels have you read this term?

2AD read The Midnight Gang and Gangsta Granny Strikes Again!

2J read Code Name: Bananas and The World's Worst Pets!

Numeracy

What are some of the maths activities we did this term?

We did an Epsom Winter Festival activity. So we had to fill a sheet with a page sticking to the left, right, up and down sticking to a big sheet of paper.

One of the sheets has a calendar where we had to write when the festival was happening. It had to happen in August, July or June. That had to be on the left.

Then you have write the directions to the activities. That was 3 sheets stuck on the right, that is when you fill in what 3 activities that you want to do, then you write how many steps and if you need to turn to the left or right.

The sheet at the top is when you have to write or draw in colour but you have to write ‘Epsom Winter Festival.’

On the bottom there is a double sided sheet. You have to write your 3 activities and what time they were going to happen during the festival.

The middle sheet is a paper map of the school then you have to glue 3 clocks and 3 tiny squared paper with your drawing of each activity. Then you glue your clock with your time on it and glue it on the school's map.

We did patterns with lego and shapes and measurements. We drew patterns in our books and had to count the corners of the shapes. When we did patterns with lego we had to count the studs.

We also got to play 99maths and kahoot on our laptops.  We did quizzes on time and counting patterns.

I liked the relay race, it is when you fill up your house's containers with water,  blocks or been bags. Howard won, most of the time.

I liked it because I like to do races and I also like to fill stuff up, with been bags from the sports shed also blocks and water. I like to do it with water more because it made harder and more fun.

- Alia

I liked making patterns and changing different shapes and lego blocks. And doing the winter festival for only grade 2AD and 2J.

I liked it because I like shapes and patterns and measurements and people liked doing it.

Another fun activity that we did was when we put chocolate on four chairs and people were so happy and they were so excited to eat them and people mostly went to the one that had the most chocolates and we changed it to three and people also went to the one that had the least chocolate. I liked when we got to eat it.

Inquiry

What did we learn during Inquiry this term?

We made ice cream it was so fun! We were in partners and we put in lots of ingredients then we had to shake it really hard. But then it was worth all the hard work because we got to eat it!

We also did dancing raisins. There was a big gas tank and a water bottle. We filled the water bottle with gas and then we put lots of raisins in it. It actually looked like the raisins were dancing. We had a blast!

We made posters of reduce, reuse, recycle so that the school community is reminded to not waste stuff.

How do we save resources at EPS?

We are really good at bringing containers to school so that we can reuse them later. Theres this thing that we do every year its called nude food where we dont bring eny wrappers to school and how much wrappers we have we get that much house points. Lots of people bring drink bottles to school. In our class we have a scrap paper box so we are not using new paper to draw.

What was your favourite activity?

Definitely making ice cream it took very long we used lots of ingredients like rock salt and vanilla flavour and ice cream. I chugged it, it was sooooo good it felt like i was in heaven. Mr Janssen said our ice  cream was the best i did get a ice burn so that wasn't fun but it was worth doing!

- Tom

I liked making the recycling posters because it was so much fun and I got to draw pictures of recycling bins and the symbol.

- Eh Tha Nyow

What is something new you learned?

I learned that lots of resources come from deep inside the earth. I also learned that glass comes from sand when it is heated up.

- Tom

I learned that you can make new stuff and put them in old stuff.
