Specialist Subjects

Physical Education

This term in Physical Education, students across all year levels continued to engage in a variety of exciting and skill-building sports.

Prep to Year 2

Our youngest students focused on developing key movement skills through activities like throw and catch, kicking, bouncing, and invasion games. They participated in many games designed to improve and develop these essential skills, fostering teamwork, coordination, and confidence.

Year 3 to 6

Students in Grades 3 to 6 took part in lessons for football, netball, basketball, and baseball. They worked hard on refining their techniques, understanding game strategies, and demonstrating good sportsmanship throughout the term.

Additionally, our Year 3 to 6 students enjoyed a six-session gymnastics program at Jet’s Gym. During this program, they developed a range of gymnastics skills such as balance, coordination, flexibility, and strength, along with tumbling and apparatus work. It was fantastic to see their confidence and abilities grow with each session.

Divisional Sports Competitions

We had a great number of teams competing at divisional sports events including athletics, soccer, netball, volleyball, basketball, football, and lawn bowls. A special congratulations goes to our lawn bowls team, who have advanced to the regional playoffs in Moama next month—an impressive achievement! We’re proud of all our teams for their dedication and excellent representation of our school.

Geneva M - Shot Put

A special mention to Geneva M, who was successful in her tryouts for School Sports Victoria Athletics in Melbourne last week. She has been selected to represent Victoria for Shot Put at the National Titles in Canberra this November. She came 2nd in the tryouts with a throw of 10.25m. This is a huge achievement and the whole school is right behind you Geneva. We wish you the very best!

Music

Grade 3-6:

Production, production, production! That's been our entire focus this term. Classes have been assigned their two songs, roles have been cast and acting and singing rehearsals have begun.

Our Music classes have been spent reading through a different scene each week and creating and rehearsing dance moves to suit their songs. Bootscooting, Disco moves, Thai-Chi inspired actions, synchronised jackets and much more!

Remember that ALL Grade 3-6 students are in our production, even if they are not a lead role or singer.

And, of course, our website is the one stop shop for all things production.

Grade 1- 2:

Grade 1/2 students have been exploring some elements of Music, and then attempting to work with a partner to create small compositions that include these elements. These include tempo, harmony, rhythm and using space and patterns to create more interesting sounds.

They have continued their undertsanding of notes, bars and beats and comnbined all of this knowledge to play well known songs (K-Pop Demon Hunters, anybody?!) as well as their own pieces.

Grade Prep:

Preps have continued to learn about the larger concepts in Music, focusing on tempo. They have used their instruments and bodies to speed up and slow down based on the piece of music they are hearing. We have played instruments, counting to our magic number 4 (and sometimes 8) to play well known songs, building upon our understanding of the letter notes (A-G).

They have continued to play drama games to encourage teamwork, build resilience, learn rules to games and be good winners and losers. As well as revisiting some games from last term, we have looked at Pass the Boomwhacker (based on Bluey's Pass the Parcel - Lachy's Dad's rules, of course!), as well as "Oh, Dude" and "Heads Down, Thumbs Up", all to show that it's ok to not be the winner, and it's fun just to be playing a game together.

Finally, we have started to explore acting and drama in our games and will play with more of these ideas in Term 4.

TERM THREE WORKS

Well term three is certainly whizzing past in the art room. After a busy term of skill development our budding artist's have dived into some more in-depth units of work and expanding their knowledge of artists and the history behind how many of their works and careers came to be.  Check out some of the works in progress and how our students have reflected on their learning so far....

FROM THE ARTISTS:

INTRODUCTION TO FRED WILLIAMS -

"Fred Williams is an Australian artists who makes art with found objects. He is a landscape artist. He makes lots of pretty artworks of the Australian outback. In class we used pallet knives to make landscapes. We swayed, smeared and mixed paints to make our own landscapes. I liked when we used blobs to prepare the art and you didn't know what it would look like until the end." - Jack F 2AD.

LEARNING ABOUT YAYO KUSAMA -

"This term we have been learning about Yayo Kusama, we looked at weird and different artworks of hers. For our task we sketched and drew some unusual shapes, like flowers with eyes, spotted mushrooms and crazy shapes. We designed an artwork inspired by her and for our colors we planned some but mostly selected what we felt looked best." - Sophie 3/4P.

MAKING STARRY NIGHT -

"In art we have been learning about Starry Night which has really bright stars in the sky. It is made up of yellow, black, green, gold, brown and blue and white. The artist who made Starry Night is Van Gough. He is a famous artists. I have liked painting the mountains and mixing the blue together." - Sebastian Prep S.

✌️Auslan✌️

Our Prep students have been having a moo-velous time learning about farm animals! Over the past few weeks, we've been exploring the signs for different farm animals in Auslan, and the children have really impressed me with how quickly they have picked them up. It's been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they sign along to the song "I Went to Visit a Farm One Day" it’s definitely become one of our favourites! We have also been enjoying the classic game of Hot/Cold. It’s been great to see the preps signing together and getting so excited as they search for hidden items such as "The Green Sheep".

As part of our cultural awareness learning, our 3-6 students have been reading El Deafo by Cece Bell, a graphic novel that explores the author's real-life experiences growing up with hearing loss. Through this story, students have gained a deeper understanding of the challenges and perspectives of individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. They also learned about the Phonic Ear, an early hearing aid, and how hearing aid technology has improved over time.

Victorian College for the Deaf - Grade Six Excursion

By Cody S and Layla W.

On the 7th of August, 20 Grade 6 students went to Melbourne. It was a long but fun ride with our friends and Miss Edwards and Ms Fitz. When we got there the first thing we did was split into 2 groups. Group 1 went on the tour Miss Edwards and Group 2 that went to the cafe with Ms Fitz.At the cafe we had to sign our lunch orders and if you forgot your order the deaf cashier would help you. Most people had sausage rolls but some had other things like pizza, wraps, parcels and more.

The Tour of Victorian College of the Deaf. We met a girl Kayla there and she took us on tour. We first got to see some pictures of Sarah Ann Lewis and she was going to send her deaf daughter to England to go to a deaf school, as Australia was still starting out. Frederick John Rose reached out and built the school. He showed us the schools safe and were some of the classes where. We went and looked in the boys bathroom and it was like a mini pool. Then we went to the top of the building and looked out some windows and saw some of Australia's first graffiti which was some of the students' climbing pipes to the roof and etching their name into the metal.

Then we swapped activities. Group 1 went to the cafe group 2 went on the tour. Then after that we had a quick play at the school's playground and were supposed to chat to some deaf kids but we didn’t get to . Then we headed down to Ginger Snap Patisserie to have a tasty dessert… BEFORE DINNER. The Ginger Snap Patisserie was started by a deaf man named Brett and his hearing sister Jess, to show people that people with disabilities can do anything they want. They told us how they had a store at the Tennis also known as the Australia Open as well. They also were partnered with All Things Equal a foundation that got people with disabilities a job in hospitality. After that we headed home back to Epsom.

Have a safe and relaxing break :)
