‘Dirrarn’ which follows on from ‘Black Cockatoo’ we will read about how the main character Mia navigates her way through culture, Country and family ties when she moves to a boarding school in Perth. At the end of this unit we will be writing a factual recount about Jandamarra, an Aboriginal Leader. We can’t wait to see the amazing writing pieces the students come up with.
We have explored certain vocab, such as, instigated, unprovoked, yarn, discreet, and wafted.
We have explored writing and punctuating appositive and forming sentences using past tense, action verbs and time connectives.
Big Idea 7 - BASIC FACTS & ALGORITHMS: Basic facts and algorithms for operations with rational numbers use notions of equivalence to transform calculations into simpler ones.
Students are rediscovering many areas of our curriculum in this idea. Students are focusing on factors and multiples, all things multiplication and division, fractions and simplifying them, adding, subtracting, estimating and rounding decimals which includes forms of money and measurement.
" Call to Action"
Students are learning about some of the biggest problems facing children around the world and the aid agencies working to help solve these problems. They will practise making values-based decisions in response to ethical dilemmas. Students will learn some literary devices and use them to write a spoken word poem to call people to action. They will perform your spoken word poem at the Poetry Slam.
Last week, students looked at what social justice is and they learnt about what rights children should have.
Also, they have brainstormed these key topics to write a spoken word poem.

This term, we are also teaching our Health subject. Students analyse health information to refine strategies that can enhance their own and others’ health, safety, relationships and wellbeing.

Health habits
This week, we have implement a sleep tracker for both classes for the term. We are tracking our sleep and how that can affect us at school. It is recommended that students get 9-11 hours of sleep each night!
