Education in Faith

Start of Term Whole School Mass

Thanks to everybody who attended and also helped lead our Whole School Mass to start the Term, which was held last Friday morning (25/7).

Family Led Sunday Mass

During 2025, the Parish in conjunction with the Parish Primary Schools, has planned Family led weekend Masses. These Masses will be celebrated once a term and be followed by hospitality.  They will be a great opportunity for children and their families to be involved in a Mass within the parish community.

Family Masses will provide an opportunity for families to come together and to support each other in faith.  They can particularly be important for families who are presenting their children for Sacraments throughout the year.  There may be opportunities to reconnect with our own faith as adults.  There may be opportunities to engage with parish life and learn more about the faith, for those who are not so familiar with our local worshiping community.  All families are welcome at these family Masses no matter what your religious background or affiliation.

Family Masses scheduled for later this year are:

Sunday, 17 August at 5.00 pm (OLGC Church)

Special invitation to Year 6 students and families (includes Confirmation Commitment)

Saturday, 15 November at 6.00pm (OHR Church)

Prep, Year 1 & Year 2 and new families for 2026 are particularly invited to this Mass

WALA the sacrament of Confirmation

I can define what the Holy Spirit is.

I can identify where the Holy Spirit is present in the world.

In preparation for some of our Year 6 students receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation early next term, we have begun to explore the Holy Spirit and its presence in the world around us.

We looked at the image above and discussed what we already know about the Holy Spirit. We then explored some wonderings or questions and after reading the story of Pentecost and further class discussion, we shared our new learnings.

KNOWWONDERINGSLEARNINGS

This picture is Pentecost.

The Holy Spirit is an extension of God.

The Holy Spirit shows itself as tongues of fire.

It comes from Heaven.

It is part of the Trinity….the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is God.

Pentecost happens 50 days after Easter.

This art piece is the Pentecost story… when the Holy Spirit appeared as flames above the disciples.

How is God three people in one God?

Will the Holy Spirit come down on us?

What are the gifts and fruits of the Spirit?

Were the disciples burned by the flames?

Did the story of Pentecost really happen?

I wonder why the Holy Spirit is represented by a flame.

Who is the artist who has created this image of the Pentecost story?

When the Holy Spirit came it let the disciples speak different languages.

The dove is a symbol of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is powerful.

In order to have the Holy Spirit to help you, you need to let it in.

Confirmation is one of the Sacraments of initiation.

The story of Pentecost is in the book of Acts.

When you are baptised you receive the Holy Spirit. The sacrament of Confirmation makes it grow.

Sunday Gospel

The liturgy of the Catholic Church provides a framework for reflection which is used by Catholics throughout the world. Each week in the Newsletter, you will find the Sunday Gospel as well as some discussion questions to have with your child/ren.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke

A man in the crowd said to Jesus, ‘Master, tell my brother to give me a share of our inheritance.’ ‘My friend,’ he replied, ‘who appointed me your judge, or the arbitrator of your claims?’ Then he said to them, ‘Watch, and be on your guard against avarice of any kind, for a man’s life is not made secure by what he owns, even when he has more than he needs.’

Then he told them a parable: ‘There was once a rich man who, having had a good harvest from his land, thought to himself, “What am I to do? I have not enough room to store my crops.” Then he said, “This is what I will do; I will pull down my barns and build bigger ones, and store all my grain and my goods in them, and I will say to my soul: My soul, you have plenty of good things laid by for many years to come; take things easy, eat, drink, have a good time.” But God said to him, “Fool! This very night the demand will be made for your soul; and this hoard of yours, whose will it be then?” So it is when a man stores up treasure for himself in place of making himself rich in the sight of God.’

Discussion Questions

1. In today’s gospel, what did the farmer grow?

2. What did he decide to build?

3. Why did he want to store everything up?

4. God told the farmer that he was foolish to try and store everything up because he was not going to live for ever. Why does God warn the farmer against putting all his effort into storing up wealth and possessions?

5. How can we be ‘rich’ rather than ‘poor’ in the sight of God?
