Learning & Teaching in the LIBRARY

The CBCA (Children’s Book Council of Australia) is celebrating 80 years in 2025.  That’s 80 years of Book Week!

The theme for 2025 is BOOK AN ADVENTURE!

All classes are being exposed to the Early Childhood and Picture Book Categories.

Our P - 2 students have voted on their choice in the Early Childhood category.

Students voted on which book they think might win - which book grabbed their attention.  Our Prep and 1\2’s were shown the front covers and the blurbs were read to them before they voted on a graph.

Our 3 - 6 students voted by a google form.  They were given the title, then an image of the front cover and then the blurb to read before they made their decisions as to which book grabbed their interest.  They could change their vote in each question asked.

Year 3\4 voting results.

Yr 5\6 voting results.

Each week one of the books is read in the Library and an artistic or written activity to accompany it is completed.  On reading these books we may

  • make predictions,
  • share any connections of text-to-self
  • explore the different text features
  • Character descriptions and traits
  • Moods and emotions in the story
  • Vocabulary - rhyme, alliteration, onomatopoeia, word families, verbs, exclamation marks
  • The author’s style and how they entertain us, the readers
  • Visual literacy - how the illustrators use techniques in their images

Our 5\6 students are working on a research project of one of the short listed authors or illustrators.  They are researching information about their chosen person to present a project on their findings.  This information will range from a short biography, books they have written or illustrated and the style and techniques used and finishing off with a summary of the book that has been shortlisted for this year.

We look forward to our Book Week Parade on Thursday 11th September, where we all come dressed as a book character.  This will coincide with our Term 3 Gather Day where we will have some fun book activities and games to work together on.

Books certainly do take us on some wonderful adventures!
