Maths Learning Highlights

This term, our Year 5/6 students have been developing their problem-solving skills in Mathematics. They have been learning how to carefully read questions, identify important information, and choose efficient strategies to solve a variety of real-world problems. Students are becoming more confident in explaining their thinking and justifying their answers.

Our learners have been investigating different types of data in a hands-on and engaging way. We took our learning outside, where students collected real information from nature, such as counting objects, observing patterns, and recording findings. This helped them understand how data can be gathered, sorted, and interpreted in meaningful contexts.

Students have been exploring 3D shapes and their properties. Through interactive activities, they investigated nets of 3D objects such as cubes and cuboids. They learned how these nets fold to form solid shapes and can now confidently identify and name them. This has strengthened their spatial awareness and understanding of geometric concepts.

We are proud of the curiosity, enthusiasm, and effort our Year 5/6 students continue to show in their Maths learning!

Sleepover at The Huddle

Our Year 5/6 students took part in a special sleepover in the Huddle, where they enjoyed a fun-filled evening of games, shared activities, and time to connect with their peers. This experience provides a wonderful opportunity for students to strengthen friendships, build teamwork skills, and grow in confidence as they participate in a range of engaging group activities.

Throughout the night, students also developed their independence and responsibility as they managed their belongings, followed routines, and respected shared spaces. Events like this help foster a strong sense of community and belonging, creating lasting memories beyond the classroom. It was such a memorable experience for all students!

Reading Focus: Blueback

Our Year 5/6 students have finished exploring the novel Blueback, with a strong focus on developing their inferencing skills in weeks 7-9, particularly in understanding setting and atmosphere. Through rich discussions and close reading, students have learned how to “read between the lines” by using clues from the text to build a deeper picture of the environment and mood within the story. They have been identifying how descriptive language helps shape the setting and influences how readers feel.

In addition, students have engaged in thoughtful conversations about the environmental issues presented in the text. They explored real-world connections, such as ocean conservation and human impact on marine life, and reflected on the importance of protecting our environment. This has encouraged students to think critically about their role in caring for the world around them while deepening their understanding of the story.

Writing Focus

In Writing, our Year 5/6 students have been working on polishing their narratives by improving the accuracy of their dialogues. They have learned how to use correct grammar and punctuation when writing conversations between characters, including the use of quotation marks, commas, and appropriate sentence structure. This has helped them make their writing clearer, more engaging, and more realistic.
