Technology and Sleep – Helping Children Build Healthy Habits
As eSafety Week approaches, the Alannah & Madeline Foundation is sharing information about healthy technology habits.
This week’s focus is Technology and Sleep. The information below has been adapted from material available at the Alannah & Madeline Foundation website.
Getting a good night’s sleep is very important for children. Sleep helps students concentrate, learn and manage their emotions. When children don’t get enough sleep, it can affect their mood, behaviour and learning at school.
One factor that can affect sleep is the use of technology such as phones, tablets and computers. These devices can make it harder for children to fall asleep and may reduce the amount of sleep they get.
How Technology Affects Sleep
Technology can interfere with sleep in several ways:
- Children may lose track of time and stay up too late on devices.
- Screen light can make the brain more alert and make it harder to fall asleep.
- Games and messaging can be stimulating and keep children awake.
Children often find it difficult to switch off devices at night, so support from families is important.
What is Sleep Hygiene?
“Sleep hygiene” means having healthy sleep habits and routines. This includes:
- Going to bed at a regular time
- Getting enough sleep
- Having a comfortable and quiet sleeping environment
Tips for Supporting Healthy Sleep
Create a consistent bedtime routineA regular bedtime helps children settle more easily. Quiet activities such as reading or relaxing are ideal before sleep.
Allow enough time for sleepChildren of different ages need different amounts of sleep. Making sure children get enough rest helps them feel ready to learn each day.
Limit technology before bedTry turning off devices 30–60 minutes before bedtime and encourage calm activities instead.
Keep bedrooms device-freeCharging devices in a shared space overnight can reduce distractions and improve sleep.
Be a good role modelChildren are more likely to follow healthy routines if they see adults doing the same.
Talk about sleepHelp your child understand why sleep is important and how technology can affect it.
Building Good Habits Takes Time
Developing healthy routines does not happen overnight. Small changes and consistent routines can make a big difference over time.
Supporting good sleep habits helps children feel happier, healthier and ready to learn each day.
