Our topic in Art this term is  'Art around the world'.

FOUNDATION:

In Foundation last week, we created mendhi hands. We traced our own hands and decorated them using patterns that we looked at from India and Pakistan. The designs are intricate and detailed. They symbolise joy, luck, and blessings, especially during weddings, festivals, and other important events. The reddish-brown colour that henna leaves after application also signifies vitality and the bonds of family and community.

This week we are pairing up with STEM class to begin creating our own papier mache planets.

GRADE 1/2:

In Grade 1 and 2 last week, we looked at Amate bark paintings from Mexico. The students looked at designs from these and started drawing their own designs.

We also have paired up with STEM classes this week to create our own papier mache planets.

GRADE 3/4:

In Grade 3 and 4 last week, we started to create sunset backgrounds using soft pastels and focusing on blending and gradients. Our focus was the Australian outback. This week, students have started to use black oil pastel to create Australian animals and trees, to look like shadows against the sunset.

GRADE 5/6:

In Grade 5 and 6 last week, students started to create their own rangioli/mandala design. Rangoli is used in India and consists of bright and colourful intricate designs, and usually serve a symbolic purpose. Rangoli can have other meanings, too, including bringing good fortune.

This week we paired up with STEM and made playdough.

In our first two weeks of term, students across all year levels have been looking at a variety of topics relating to our physical and emotional health.

Students in Foundation have been exploring different food types, including healthy and ‘sometimes’ foods. We have been discussing how a balanced diet is good for giving us energy for learning and playing. They have also made their own Healthy Eating placemat featuring drawings of their favourite healthy foods.

Grades 1/2 have been looking at what makes a good friend, and practicing their own skills on how to be kind and generous to others. Students have drawn their own ‘Friendship Garden’, as we discussed how friendships can be like flowers that need care and attention in order to grow.

Grades 3/4 took a look at the different types of systems we have in our body, and talked about how these systems work. We discussed the respiratory, circulatory, nervous, digestive and skeletal systems, and learned how each one works in complicated and fascinating ways to keep us moving and healthy. Students will begin working on a Healthy Habits Media Presentation that focuses on a subject of their choosing that will promote healthy habits.

Grade 5/6s looked at our digital health, and why it is important to be mindful of our screen time. We took a look at all the different types of technology we use throughout the day, and observed how many hours we usually spend using it every day. Students have also started the Healthy Habits Media Presentation project, which we will be working on for the next few weeks before presenting them to our class.

In STEM, students will explore the fascinating world of Earth and Space Science.

Foundation - Grade 1/2

Students will be exploring our planet Earth and our Solar System. They will be learning all the different names of the planets and some of the objects you can see in our night sky. Students will also be learning about our Moon, its phases and the effect it has on our ocean's tides.

Watch this fascinating video that shows us how small we really are!

Grade 3/4

Students will explore Earth and the Moon, learning about the Earth's tilt, rotation and, revolution and its relationship to our weather and seasons. They will learn about Apollo 11 and the Moon Landing, and look at the fascinating experiments conducted in the International Space Station. Most importantly, they will learn how we got there by understanding rocketry.

Grade 5/6

Students will be learning about Project Artemis and the Australian Space Agency's contribution to getting humans to Mars via the moon. They will be learning about the essential skills and equipment needed for humans to survive on Mars. Students will be designing a Mars Habitation Hub for humans and using a 3D printer to print their designs.

This term, students have been very lucky to have coaches from Broadmeadows Broncos Basketball Association come to our school and teach them new skills and games. Students have been learning how to bounce the ball, pass different throws to their partner, learning how to shoot correctly and defend.

The next sport that students will be focusing on is Hockey.

Last term, the students participated in Athletics Day completing different events that they practiced during sports sessions. Congratulations to Yellow/Chisholm house for being the winner of Athletics Day 2024.

Also a big thank you to everyone who donated a gold coin, as a school we raised $98 which will go towards purchasing sport equipment for the school.
