Religious Education
This term in Religious Education, we will read and discuss scripture related to families in the Bible. We will begin with the Holy Family: Mary, Joseph and Jesus and make connections with Jesus' childhood and our own. We will then explore scripture related to Mary’s cousin Elizabeth and her Son John the Baptist and his relationship with Jesus.
The second half of the term we will focus on Prayer exploring the purpose and types of prayer. The children will read, write and share prayers of Thanksgiving, Adoration (Praise), Petition (Asking for the needs of ourselves) and Intercession (Asking for the needs of others).
Inquiry
In our Inquiry unit ‘Would you like to play?’ the children will explore the question: ‘How have changes in our world shaped the ways we play and connect with each other? Through the study of the history of toys we will compare play of our parents and grandparents' childhoods with our own. The children will explore the materials toys of the past were made from and compare this with toys of today.
Mathematics
This term in Mathematics, we will be focusing on:
- Addition and Subtraction
- adding and subtracting one and two digit numbers using a variety of strategies including counting on, counting back, partitioning, doubles, near doubles, bridging to 10
- using drawings and physical materials (e.g. number lines, 100s charts, base-10 blocks) to model addition and subtraction problems
- Shape
- recognising, making, comparing, sorting and classifying shapes based on their features, such as number of sides and using terms such as opposite, parallel, curved and straight
- creating shapes to manipulate them and describe what happens (e.g. dragging, pushing, rotating, etc)
- Multiplication and division
- practising skip counting sequences of twos, fives and tens
- modelling grouping and equal sharing using physical materials and drawing pictures to represent the problem
- investigating doubling and halving to assist with multiplication and division facts for twos
- Year 2 - recalling multiplication facts for twos
English
This term in Literacy, we will be focusing on Narratives. Through the use of rich literature, ‘Jetty Jumping’ we will be learning about specific language choices made by the author to entertain and will continue to extend our vocabulary by writing more descriptively. Students will have the opportunity to use their imagination creating fictional texts, with a focus on adding more detail using adjectives and adverbs. Handwriting will also continue to be a focus as students aim to form all lowercase and uppercase letters correctly.
We will build students reading comprehension strategies, by looking closely at descriptions of characters and settings. We will continue to focus on predicting and visualising before and during reading and the language and vocabulary used to create characters, settings. The students will practise answering literal and inferential questions about texts they have read.
Please continue to encourage your child to read aloud at home, to develop their fluency and expression.
Social & Emotional Learning
This term in 1/2, we will continue to focus on social and emotional learning using the RRRR (Resilience, Rights, and Respectful Relationships) material. We will revisit and redefine our overarching theme for the year, "courage," and strengthen our understanding of emotional literacy. During Circle Time, students will have the opportunity to respond to realistic and relatable situations that are modelled for them, helping them develop practical skills and a deeper emotional understanding.
STEM
This term, the Year 1/2 classes will focus on a physical science unit in STEM, defining and exploring the concepts of push and pull. They will investigate simple machines and toys that utilise these forces, tying this knowledge into our Inquiry unit. Additionally, the students will have the opportunity to design their own simple machines, applying their understanding of push and pull and the suitability of different materials in a hands-on, creative project.
Digital Technology
This term in Digitech students will be collecting, sorting and organising data and identifying the different types of data (text, numbers, sound and images). They will use a digital system (computer) to organise and represent the data. They will be introduced to different programs on the computer to present information.
Specialist Classes
Students will have specialist classes weekly (please see timetable below for each class). Each Wednesday we will have STEM, Digitech and ‘Mini Math’ (a variety of Math games to develop fluency) rotations. Students will stay with their class group and rotate through the different activities. Miss Woolley will teach ‘Mini Maths’, Miss M will teach Digitech and Mrs Webb will teach STEM. We will have our junior sport fortnightly on a Friday afternoon.
The 1/2s will visit the Library every Friday and borrow different books for the classroom as well as some extra Home Reading. The Preps will visit the library on a Tuesday.
