Somers Camp

From Tuesday 16th July - Wednesday 24th July, 11 Grade 5 students & Costa, had the opportunity to attend an outdoor education camp in Somers.

Somers facilitates opportunities for every child to develop their personal and social capabilities, to progress their understanding of sustainable practices and to enhance their ability to meet challenges and change by encouraging resilience. This is done through a number of fun and engaging activities, such as:

  • Archery: learning how to use a bow and arrow
  • Art: using materials to make friendship bracelets
  • Bike Riding: improve bike handling skills
  • Boating: cooperation, communication and teamwork to row a boat up stream
  • Bush Craft: safe and responsible ways to make and extinguish a fire, cooking damper, and boiling tea
  • Challenge Swing: 18.5m giant swing to challenge students at their own comfort level
  • Drama: dressing up and face-painting to participate in on-stage comedy acts
  • High Ropes: using specialised equipment to move through the 6-metre high course
  • Initiative Activities: participating in team building activities
  • Orienteering: learning how to read a map and navigate around camp with a partner
  • Rock climbing/Abseiling: learning how to climb, belay others and abseil down a 10m wall
  • Flying Fox: taking a leap of faith on the 100m long flying fox

Night activities included:

  • Team games
  • Night walk
  • Bush Dancing
  • Concert/Comedy Acts
  • Tabloid Sports
  • Disco
  • Campfire

The food was incredible! And varied each day/night from: lasagne, roast, sausages, chicken, hamburgers, bacon and eggs, pancakes, toast, cereal, vegetable stir fry and plenty of fruit and biscuits!

All students had an amazing time and showed plenty of growth. The next opportunity for Merri-bek PS to attend Somers Camp will be in 2026.
