Learning done in different ways......

V12

As part of our Historical Recount writing and our learning about Laws and Rules in HASS, V12 visited the Old Adelaide Gaol this week. We had an organised tour and even got some extra time to visit other areas because we where so engaged with our questions and general fascination about life in the past. We learned about what life was like in the mid 1850s in the gaol and how it changed through the decades. The students enjoyed stories about the inmates, living conditions, crimes, punishments, and compared social justice issues with today's standards. We also heard about potential ghosts lingering around too - perfect timing for Halloween fun!

The students enjoyed the learning the excursion provided and this is what they said.....

"The ghost stories are so spooky, they are the best"

"The story about the guard and the pie was funny"

"The way people visited is interesting. How can you just yell through a gate like that?!"

"Women and men were at the prison, as if!"

"Carrying a bucket of poo would have been gross!"

"The food didn't sound very nice when it first opened"

"Oh my gosh, it is so dark in here"

"Hey...wait a minute, hanging her wasn't very fair!" (Elizabeth Woolcock's case, only female to be hung for poisoning her husband who was very mean to her and she couldn't get away and no one would help her)

V5, V6 and V7

This term in Child Protection V5, V6 and V7 have been learning about how to keep safe when out in public places in particular out on the road. On Wednesday this week,  Constable Merrilyn Millar came to talk to the early years students about road safety. She spoke to the students about topics such as safe places to play, how to cross the road safely and how to be safe whilst riding a bike. The students were engaged in the presentation, they asked lots of great questions and learnt many practical ways to stay safe out in public.
