Year 9 Food Technology

Our Year 9 Food Technology class have been learning about pastry, its uses, history and cultural relevance. As a part of this unit students produced a batch of puff pastry with 156 layers. They went on to use their pastry to make delicious homemade sausage rolls. After this activity the students preformed a sensory analysis to compare their product to a commercially made equivalent.

Nothing like escaping the general classes and moving into the Technology rooms, an opportunity to lose yourself in the making of projects that will live on your shelf or put to good use at home. One can always look back and be proud to say “I made this”.

Digital Technology News

It has been a big month for Digital Technology with five teams competing in the RoboCup Junior Australia national championships. The national competition was held in Melbourne this year and was the largest national competition yet with over 200 teams competing across the three major divisions: Rescue, Soccer and On-stage.

For the soccer competition each student team prepares a team of two robots that need to direct an infrared emitting ball into the opposition goal while protecting their own goal. Marko and Arthur later found out they were in the “Group of Death” with two reigning state championship teams in their group. They did come with one in four games, which is a particularly good effort considering Glen Eira College has never entered a soccer team in the past.

For the Rescue division, the team must build and program a robot to autonomously navigate its way through a city devastated by a natural disaster to rescue a victim trapped in a toxic spill. Isaac followed up his good showing at the Victorian state event by finishing ninth out of 36 teams in the secondary division of Rescue. Without one bad round, he would have been vying for a top five finish.

Nathael, Gabe and Moritz were all entering robots for the first time and showed continued improvement over the course of the competition. Asher and Sid (with help from Gabe) took on a new challenge, creating a bespoke robot using a Raspberry Pi Pico microcontroller. This has never before been attempted at a RoboCup Junior event, but there clearly is a lot of potential. Next year, Brisbane?!
