GPS Cows and Ag Tech

The Year 11 VCE Ag/Hort students had a visit from Kate at CQU who shared with them the GPS Cows learning activities. This program has been written for secondary students and involves using an online GIS platform to analyse the movements of a cow wearing a GPS Collar in NSW. Students learnt to add various layers onto the map in order to view where the cow had been and then make inferences from that information as to why she had made those movements. This technology assist farmers in monitoring animal behaviour which can be an indicator of their health status, breeding cycle, staying in their given paddock, and livestock theft.

Next week Mrs Drinnan will attend a professional development workshop with CQU learning about 3 Ag Tech programs which will become part of the Year 10 Agriculture curriculum from 2024. The programs include GPS Cows, Agriwebb (farm management) and Escavox (logistics and food traceability to reduce food waste). She will receive a GPS collar for a sheep as part of the experience.
