Big Feelings and Tired Kids: The Mid-Term Dip

As we move through the middle of the school term, it is common for primary-aged children to experience a dip in energy, motivation and emotional regulation. After many weeks of learning, social interaction, routines and busy schedules, children can begin to feel tired, overwhelmed or more sensitive than usual.

At this stage of the term, parents may notice increased frustration, difficulty with morning routines, emotional reactions, friendship worries or reluctance toward school tasks. These responses are often signs that children are needing extra rest, reassurance and connection.

Simple, consistent routines at home can make a big difference to a child’s wellbeing and ability to cope. Prioritising sleep, providing opportunities for downtime and play, limiting busy schedules where possible and spending quality time together can help children feel calm, supported and emotionally secure.

It is also helpful to remember that behaviour is often a form of communication. Children may not always have the words to explain when they are feeling tired, worried or overwhelmed.

A calm conversation, encouragement and reassurance from trusted adults can help children reset and finish the term feeling more confident and supported.
