Year 8 Captain
Happy Term 2 everyone!
I am Nicola, the Year 8 Captain, and 2 weeks ago, the Year 8s went on camp! Who doesn’t love camp? We went by bus to The Summit in Gippsland, which is about a 2-hour drive, and as we arrived, the energy and vibes were high. Everyone had been waiting for this moment all year! We found out our cabins right as we got there and, with no doubt, the teachers did an amazing job choosing everyone’s cabin groups. No one was disappointed. Most students got cabins, but if you were in my “cabin” group, you would have realised that we got a glamping tent. Although many of us thought of this as a negative, some of us saw this as a positive. We were stepping out of our comfort zone, trying something new, but the best part was that we could chat all evening as everyone else’s cabins were a bit further away.
The food was my highlight of this camp. We had the best gourmet breakfasts, lunches, dinners, desserts and snacks. My favourites were the chicken schnitzel with potatoes and veggies, ham and cheese croissants, spaghetti bolognese, waffles with ice cream and so, so much more.
The activities were very eye-opening and loads of fun. Many favourites were:
- Laser Skirmish - an outdoor laser tag activity that was all about technique and strategies with your team
- The Flying Fox – a scenic zipline overlooking the lake that made students feel like they were flying
- Snowy River Challenge – a bunch of team-building activities that allowed students to work on leadership and build connections with their GOAL group
- Jump Free – a mini bungee jump that allowed students to take a huge step out of their comfort zone and face their fears
- Monster Course – a team-building initiative that encouraged students to get a little muddy, as well as complete activities in the mud (an activity many never expected themselves to do).
The camp ended way too quickly. No one was ready to say goodbye, as everyone was enjoying it a lot. All of us Year 8s had a great time and we can’t wait to see what other camps await us in the coming years!
Student Wellbeing Leaders
The Wellbeing Team is happy to say that the school will be celebrating IDAHOBIT Day to make sure all of our LGBTQ+ students feel seen and appreciated at this school. We will be decorating the school to show our support. We all look forward to seeing the decorations and students supporting their peers.
Community Liaison Leaders
On Monday, the 6th of May, Beaumaris Secondary had an Open Night for the whole community. On the night, families were able to have a tour run by a student leader or a self-guided tour, exploring the amazing facilities of Beaumaris Secondary College. In each learning space, there were classes showcasing subjects such as Communicate and Relate, BEST, Healthy Lifestyles and many more. A highlight of the night was seeing subjects in action, such as experiments happening in the science lab and those delicious muffins in the kitchens! On display were Year 9/10 specialisms and VCE subjects. Overall, it was great to see everyone come and visit Beaumaris Secondary College.
