Learning Update

From Mr Collins 3-6

I'm back everyone. I'd love to say it was an amazing holiday but 8 days of heavy rain was certainly challenging. I want to thank all of the teachers who did a fantastic job following our program while I was away. Now that I'm back, we are in full swing. Mathsmates are coming home home again, the spelling program is underway and we are building on our concept knowledge from Term 1.

In English we are writing information reports. This week the students had the difficult task of reporting on a classroom object. Part of our focus was on presentation, and in particular our handwriting and making use of empty space.

In Maths we are varied depending on the day. Monday and Tuesday we studied rounding numbers through our 'is closest to' game, Wednesday we used various forms of weighing to measure the mass of different objects, Thursday we revised area and perimeter by drawing a scaled birds-eye view of our classroom and on Friday we collected and created data displays.

In Integrated Studies we are conducting an experiment on the change that occurs with different objects. We have placed a number of items on our round table and have hypothesized what we believe will happen to them after a week in the open. Next week we will compare them with the photos we've taken and justify if the changes are physical or chemical. Stay tuned...

From Ms Lehre P-2

Literacy

P–2 students have been enthusiastically exploring the sounds ‘aw’ (as in crawl) and ‘or’ (as in north), and have had so much fun building their phonics knowledge. I have been incredibly impressed during our sound checks — some students are even confidently identifying when to use the trigraph ‘tch’ (as in witch). They know it comes after a short vowel sound, which was definitely a proud teacher moment!

Maths

We have launched three exciting maths teams — the Mermaids, Huntrix and Dinosaurs who compete each day in number fluency challenges. This has been such a fun and engaging way to begin our maths lessons. Students have been learning about part-part-whole using unifix blocks and have also started exploring multiplication through arrays.

The Resilience Project

As part of The Resilience Project, we recently read a story about an elephant with big ears for listening — which inspired us to create our own elephant ears! TRP continues to be woven throughout all of our learning, and I am so proud to award dojo points to students who consistently demonstrate kindness, inclusion and respect towards others.
