Welcome back to Term 2! We hope you had a Happy Easter holiday and enjoyed some quality family time. 

 

Term Two is an exciting one with our Athletics Day, ‘Mother’s and Special Friends’ Celebration, along with our famous Friendship Fair Day.

English

Reading

Our Term Two Core Knowledge Units are titled Classification and Space. These units are rich in language and content, which support students in building their worldly knowledge as well as promote the use of rich vocabulary. These units are also used to support students' oral and written comprehension development.

Writing

Writing is taught explicitly and sequentially in the lessons. This term, students continue to build on their sentence structures and build on the construction of Information Texts and Scientific Reports. Students are also taught the accompanying grammar and punctuation when writing sentences.

Spelling

Students participate in the ‘Spelling Mastery’ program four mornings a week in ability groups from Year 3-6. The program involves morphology (prefixes, suffixes) and the spelling rules that govern them. Students are guided through lessons that cater to their specific needs.

Speaking & Listening

Students will be encouraged to participate in a variety of formal and informal oral language activities throughout the year.

 

Mathematics

This term, students will be provided with many opportunities to explore the following topics, using a range of relevant and open-ended learning experiences: 

  • Number & Algebra: Fractions, Patterns, Addition & Subtraction
  • Measurement & Geometry: Length, 
  • Statistics & Probability: Data Collection

Please encourage your child to continually review their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts to ensure they are working towards immediate recall. 

 

 

Religion

Scripture and Jesus

The students will focus on ‘Scripture & Jesus’. They will develop their knowledge and understanding of parables and locate scripture readings in the bible. They will interpret parables and reflect on how scripture is used by the Catholic community through rituals.

 

Topic - Earth & Beyond 

 

Key Questions: 

 

  • What characteristics set living things apart from non-living things, and how can we classify living organisms based on these traits?
  • How do life cycles differ among various organisms, and what are the important stages in these cycles?
  • How does Earth's rotation create the cycle of day and night, and what other impacts does it have on our planet?
  • What natural and human-induced processes change Earth's surface, and how do these changes affect the environment?

 

Curriculum Links: Biological Science

In the study of Biological Sciences, students will be exploring the concept of living things, focusing on how they can be categorised based on observable characteristics. The aim is to help students understand the key differences between living and non-living things, recognising the unique features that define life. 

 

Curriculum Links: Earth and Space Science

In the study of Earth's sciences, students will explore how Earth's rotation on its axis creates predictable patterns, notably the transition between day and night. This learning objective emphasises the role of Earth's axial rotation in influencing daily cycles and how it relates to the broader context of the solar system.

 

 

Homework

Students receive streamlined homework on a weekly basis. This will be given out and corrected on Fridays. Homework includes:

  • 20 minutes of reading each day, recorded in their school diary
  • English & Mathematics units covering each strand of English and Mathematics

The Year 3&4 students will visit the Malvern Library on Friday afternoons. In order to borrow they will need their library membership card each Friday.
