Artist in Residence - Samantha Richards

For the past term we have been extremely fortunate to have Indigenous Artist, Samantha Richards, as our Artist in Residence

Samantha has been educating our Year 7, 8 and 10 students in many aspects of Indigenous Art every Friday.

Samantha is a descendent of the Wurundjeri and Dja Dja Wurrung Tribes of the Melbourne and Bendigo regions. Over the term, Sam has conveyed her immense knowledge of Indigenous story-telling, symbols, culture and understanding of the land, to our students in a straightforward and captivating manner.

Each of our classes have been working on different projects with Sam this semester:

  • Our Year 7 classes have been weaving raffia based on traditional Indigenous symbols in addition to creating Clap Sticks in their Wood Technology class.
  • Our Year 8 classes have been creating 3D sculptures using the animals from the Dreamtime stories as their inspiration.
  • The Year 10 students have been creating their own patterns in Procreate using the traditional Victorian symbols.

In Term 2, Samantha will start working with our Year 12 Art students. Sam will give the students an introductory talk about different art forms, her ideas behind the artwork and will also let them know about the artists that inspire her.

Sam will also continue with the weaving and sculpture projects with our Year 7 and 8 students respectively. The next stage of our weaving projects will be incorporating sustainable emu feathers into the students' creations.

The work that has been produced by our students this term, with Sam and their teachers' guidance, is outstanding, as can be seen from the below photos. Please stay tuned to our Facebook and Instagram pages for more images as the students complete their projects in term two.
