This week, I attended the Association of Independent Schools of Australia’s (AHISA) Leading, Learning and Caring Conference.
A resounding theme was the need to foster curiosity, optimism and resilience in our students. In today’s rapidly evolving world, education goes beyond textbooks and exams; it encompasses collaboration, problem-solving, communication, and creativity, all of which are integral to preparing our students for success in the future.
As I listened to each speaker, I reflected on the opportunities students at Leighland have to develop these skills. The journey of learning is not just about acquiring knowledge, but also about embodying essential virtues that shape us into the individuals God intends us to be. Proverbs 18:15 reminds us that "an intelligent heart acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge."
Young children are inherently curious. They seek knowledge by asking lots of questions, exploring, experimenting and taking risks, rapidly propelling them towards new and deeper understandings about the world around them. At Leighland, we encourage our students and staff to be curious and courageous learners, regardless of their age. Whether it is through core subjects, our wide range of elective subjects, or our extra curricular activities, camps and excursions, students have opportunities to be creative, collaborate, solve problems, develop resilience and communicate their learning in a wide variety of ways.
Learning should be a joyful experience, a celebration of the wonders of creation and the richness of God's truth. Our classrooms, Multi-Purpose Hall (MPH), and outdoor areas have echoed with laughter, excitement and enthusiasm this term, a testament to the joy that accompanies friendships, teamwork, discovery and understanding. As we look forward to the next term, let us hold fast to these virtues of curiosity, joy, optimism and resilience and remember that our God is creative, loving and relational. He designed us to be creative, curious and collaborative.
During this term break, I encourage you and your families to be curious and experience the wonder of discovering something new.
I pray you have a safe and enjoyable school holiday.
