Learning Community 3

5/6 Glenys Howard and Levi Hudson

Welcome back, we hope you had a terrific holiday!

In our final week of term 2 we conducted some fun experiments that crossed over between reading and maths. Reading tasks focussed upon non-fiction texts, in particular procedural texts - instructions. During reading lessons students read and followed a series of instructions. These mainly involved paper folder and creating craft items. One such item as a 'jumping' frog. Then during our maths lesson we measured how far our frogs could jump and conducted a 'jump off'! We all had a lot of fun and learnt a bit about accurate measurement, as well as following instructions to produce the best sample (frog).

This term the grade 6 students will be involved in an 8 week program run by Anglicare called "Safer Communities for Children". The information and learning of the grade 6 students will later be shared with our general school community through our PBS group activities.

Grade 5 students will undergo some leadership training and preparation to become buddies to the prep students for 2025.

Our topic for maths this week is positive and negative integers. We are trying to relate this work to real life e.g temperature, finance, time zones and height above and below sea level. We are all learning a lot!

In writing lessons we are creating autobiographies and moving into biographies next week. It has been very interesting to learn some new facts about everyone!

Our work in reading is about the difference between plot and story. We are also starting a new novel for Literature Circles.
