Parent Community Road Safety Meeting

Our Road Safety Meeting on Friday was very productive and hopefully will lead to some safer conditions for our school community. In attendance at the meeting were Michaela Settle MP, Council members, Ballarat Coachlines reps, as well as the following representatives from The Department of Transport & Planning:

Susan Tapley – Manager Communications & Stakeholder

We also had a large number of parent representatives, which was great.

Below is a summary what our current concerns are (as were outlined in the meeting):

100km/h speed limit on highway directly adjacent to school (an issue particularly in inclement weather i.e. frost, rain, fog, or sun glare west bound in afternoon) and very close proximity to the car park where children can be walking.
Accumulated speed of vehicles descending hill causing hazards both entering and exiting service lane
Vehicles increase speed to gain momentum to ascend hill causing hazards both entering and exiting service lane.
Relatively blind corners/bends for both entrances/exits to the school service lane
Inadequate signage on highway to alert traffic to school zone
Lack of turning lane into service road (westbound on highway)
Inadequate turning lane at uppermost service lane entrance (east bound)
Road markings not clear
Short turning lane at lower service lane entrance i.e Platts Road intersection
'Overtaking lane 300m ahead' sign west bound. Cars may confuse the right hand turn lane into Platts road as the start of overtaking lane.
Due to turning circle, buses are required to pull wide on the highway in order to make the corner into the service lane.
Meredith bound bus crosses 4 lanes to turn right out of upper service lane
Children may be transported to Buninyong campus and vice versa at differing times throughout the day depending on programming. Therefore a reduced speed limit would be preferable permanently or throughout the entirety of the school day.

With these concerns in mind, we presented the following proposals:

Speed limit reduced to 80kmph during school times
Increased signage/flashing lights
Turning lane west bound
Clearer road markings

Our most likely outcome in the short term will be some clear signage, which will most definitely help with trucks and vehicles slowing down and understanding that they are in a school zone. We will continue to press for larger changes in the medium to long term.

Scotsburn Fundraiser and Promotional Event

Thank you so much Scotsburn! In such a short space of time, we were able to pull off a large-scale fundraising and promotional stall at the Mining Exchange as part of the RB Sellars Clearing Sale over the weekend. Whether it was baking, collecting art works, volunteering time or extra support of any kind, nothing was too much to ask. The students involved were also incredible, selling baked goods and promoting the campus. Whilst we are still tallying the money raised, it will be a significant amount that will go directly to the campus and some of our upcoming projects, which is amazing!

This event and opportunity would not have been possible without the vision, organisation and passion of Kelly Ryan, and her team of helpers. On behalf of all of the Scotsburn community, we truly thank you!

Over the next few days we will be selling some leftover lamingtons at the campus, for the bargain price of $1. Please send along some gold coins with your child this week.

Family Groups - Sustainability Group

Last Friday we had lots of yard work happening in the Sustainability Group, before the cold and wet weather sets in. One small group of students were tasked with building some new metal garden beds for the veggie patch. They did an awesome job, and these will be great as long lasting garden beds for some new veggies and herbs to be planted.

Lunchtime club

With the colder weather now setting in, we are moving back to having Lunchtime Club each and every day in the shed, as a calm, warm and cooperative play option. This year we will also have a weekly theme that we will promote on morning announcements and in the newsletter.

This week, Lunchtime Club themes are:

Cubbies and kitchens
Cars and dinosaurs

Container Deposit Scheme

We are very excited to share that we have joined with McCallum Disability Services and BRI to recycle all eligible containers that we collect at our school, through the Commercial Container Collection Scheme (CCCD).

Both campuses of our school will receive collection bins to place containers in, with these collected by McCallum as needed.

Our school will receive 7 cents per container, with the remaining 3 cents contributing towards pickup and collection fees.

This is a win-win situation, with the school receiving additional fundraising money to put towards various projects at each campus, while at the same time helping to support sustainable employment for people living with a disability. Not to mention the environmental benefits of recycling!

We welcome any families or members of the community who would like to donate their containers to support our fundraising efforts to drop them off at the main office at Scotsburn.

All containers eligible for the 10 cent refund through the Container Deposit Scheme in Victoria are welcome.

Scotsburn Intercampus Travel

At times, Scotsburn students will be transported between campuses in order to attend classes, assemblies, special days and events. On most occasions, transport required through the day will be by bus and occasionally private car for smaller groups of students. Parents may be asked to drop off or collect from the Buninyong campus if sessions are at the beginning or ending of a day.

We will always let you know of any upcoming travel arrangements via our newsletter, Compass, or via phone for smaller, more specific travel arrangements.
