Principal's Report

Final Few Weeks of Term

We hope you had a nice long weekend in the lead up to our final 3 weeks of term.  The weeks are flying, but we have some important business to attend to, which includes:

  • End of semester 1 reports become available on Friday (June 21).  Over the past month, staff have been busy completing assessments and then writing reports, which we hope you’ll find useful and informative.
  • In the final week of school we have Parent Teacher Interviews on Monday and Wednesday. Bookings open today via Compass.  Please take this opportunity to speak with your child’s teacher/s, and don’t forget it’s an early dismissal (1pm) on Wednesday, June 26th.
  • In the final week of term there will be a focus on NAIDOC Week, building cultural understanding across the school.
  • On the final day of term it will be casual dress, with students invited to come along with a gold coin donation.  Our VOTS Team will be coming together this week to decide on a charity to donate this money to.  We’ll also have a whole school assembly on June 28th, which is a nice way to round off the term.  Parents, carers and extended family are always welcome to attend our assemblies, which are held at 9am in the school gymnasium.  A schedule of assemblies can always be found in the calendar section of each school newsletter.

Music  Scholarship Program Update

Over the past few weeks, we have been using the newsletter to provide an update with respect to our 4 scholarship programs. This week we are featuring the Music Scholarship.  Thanks to Steve Skilbeck for this update.

Music Scholarship Update

We have nine students in the Music Scholarship which is run as a band. Claire and Otto are our keyboard players while Angus is our drummer. Neve is currently on the bass ukulele and will alternate with Euphemia between bass, vocals and percussion. Finally, there are four fantastic singers – those being Claudia, Ella, Zali and Bronte.

We are hoping to have a small set of songs ready to play by the end of the year. The

songs will range from the 70’s to current day, so something for everyone. As individuals the band brings song ideas and we vote for the ones we like – it’s quite the process! It’s also great for the students to understand how a band works. Whether actually playing music or not they must communicate respectfully and listen to each other to be successful.

The band has been fortunate enough to have their own space in the cottage where we have a little permanent set up. We simply rock up and plug in. The students are also working on taking responsibility for the set up and packing up of their equipment. In fact, the whole scholarship is a nice little microcosm for expressing the school values of kindness, respect and responsibility.

The Music Scholarship is a wonderful opportunity for everyone and we would all really like to thank the Coxall Family for making it possible. Look out for the band at our next whole school assembly at the end of the term, where they’ll be performing for the first time!

Changes to the Leadership Team for the Last 3 Weeks of Term

A reminder that Bernie is currently on Long Service Leave for these last 3 weeks of term.  Throughout this period Nicole Phillips will be Acting Principal and Paula Dekok will step into the Assistant Principal (Teaching & Learning) role.  Bernie will be back for the start of term 3.

Congratulations Mr Young

We congratulate Dave Young, our former Assistant Principal for Teaching and Learning who has successfully gained the substantive Principal position at Lucas Primary School.  We wish Dave all the very best and thank him for his contributions here at Buninyong Primary School throughout his time here.
