PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY

Milgate Primary School would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land of the Wurundjeri People, and we would like to pay our respects to the elders both past and present. Staff, students and the school community understand that we thrive, learn and live on Wurundjeri Country and we stand with all cultures united as one.

THAT’S A WRAP!

As we wrap up this term, I want to reflect on another wonderful term we have had at Milgate Primary School. Students have been involved in engaging learning experiences, exciting excursions outside of the school, a variety of lunchtime clubs and leadership initiatives, and various competitive sporting events. I would also like to thank our P&F committee for the Mother’s Day breakfast and craft activity that they organised and their help with the introduction of our new lunchtime gardening club. Lastly, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our incredible teachers. Their dedication and hard work have made this term a success and created a wonderful learning environment for our students.

Wishing everyone a restful and enjoyable holiday. See you all next term on Monday 15th July.

MONSTER RAFFLE

Thank you to everyone who bought the Monster Raffle tickets. As a school, we raised an amazing $ 2,300. These funds will go towards beautifying our play spaces.

LUNCHTIME GARDENING CLUB

Last Friday, the Garden Club began an exciting reinvigoration of the garden area behind the Manuka building. Zoe from Bunnings Doncaster generously donated vegetable seedlings, potting mix, and wooden plant labels for our school garden. Jill Danne, our P& F president, is coordinating parent volunteers to join our Garden Club, and it was lovely to have two parents in addition to Jill helping our keen gardeners last week.  If you are able to help from 1:00 - 1:30 pm on Friday afternoons, please email jill.danne@gmail.com

If it is raining, we won’t run the gardening session. We look forward to many garden renovation projects in the future.

CELEBRATION OF LEARNING

On Wednesday evening, our school was filled with excitement as we hosted our Celebration of Learning event. Families were welcomed into the classrooms, where students proudly displayed their work and projects from the term. It was a wonderful opportunity for parents to see firsthand their children's creativity and hard work. A highlight of the evening was when students taught their families a fun and engaging math game.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to making this event a success.

NEW PLAYGROUND

Over the holidays, the new Year 1/2 Equipment will be installed, replacing the existing Rainbow equipment. The equipment was made possible thanks to our school community's fundraising efforts at our 2023 Fun Run. It will be a great addition to the school, and we look forward to seeing the students enjoy it next term.

MATHS GAMES DAY

On Wednesday 26th June, four of our bright Year 6 students attended a MAV Maths Games Day at Box Hill High School. Larissa T, Pearl D, Ashleigh Y and Lucas L competed in a variety of maths games against other schools from all around the eastern suburbs and represented Milgate with dignity and a passion for mathematics. They also developed their problem-solving skills when collaborating on several very challenging puzzles across the day. They had a wonderful time, and we should be supremely proud of their efforts on the day!

YEAR 6 STUDENTS VISITING PARLIAMENT

On Tuesday 25 June, six Year 6 students attended the Victorian Students’ Parliamentary Convention at the State Parliament of Victoria. This is a very unique experience that allows students from a variety of schools across Victoria to meet at the Parliament and debate a current issue within the community.

This year the students debated ‘With the increased issues related to concussion, should contact sports be banned’.

The students worked together before the event to craft an opening statement that was presented to all the delegates in which Milgate presented an argument against the proposition.

Throughout the day the students heard from experts, Dr Jade Murray presented information as to the impact concussions have on our brains and Andy Hair and Sean de Morton presented the students with the benefits of participating in contact sports.

After lunch, the students worked with their peers from other schools to formulate their final arguments in a ‘Committee Process’.

In the final session, reports from the committees were presented and then the floor was open to final arguments for and against the banning of contact sports.

Everyone then voted and the proposal was unanimously disagreed with!
