We have 98 Schools in the City of Casey and over 70,000 students. With over 42,000 families in the City of Casey making 10 trips to school per week, that is over 420,000 school trips per week on our road network.

Even though this figure might seem high to you, it is actually conservative, as we haven't included trips to kinder!

When you think about this surprising fact, it is really important for all of us to play our part and drive safely around our school precincts during those busy peak school times.

Here are a few gentle reminders of how you can play your part!

Speed limits around schools are there to keep everyone safe. Please follow the speed limits around your school.

Remember, children can be unpredictable, so controlling your speed will ensure you are doing the right thing.

No stopping signs mean “Do not stop your vehicle for any reason”.

These areas must be kept clear for

pedestrians and motorists.

The No Parking sign means that the area is a Drop off Pick up Zone.

You cannot leave your vehicle unattended, and you cannot stop for more than 2 minutes in this zone during the times on the sign. The times may be a little different at your school, but the rules are the same.

Fines can apply if the signs are not followed.

How to keep the Drop off Pick up Zone Moving:

You can only stay in the zone for 2 minutes each time and you must stay with your car.

Move as far down the Drop off Pick up Zone as possible, don’t stop in the middle of the zone as this blocks the traffic behind you.

Arrive at least three minutes after the school bell. No children are ready before this time.

Don’t arrive early and park in the pick up zone – remember, you can only stop here for 2 minutes.

Change your pick-up or drop-off times to avoid the busiest peak times. For example: in the afternoon, arrive 5 minutes after the bell to pick-up your child and avoid the busy time.

Child not there? Keep moving! Drive out of the zone and come back, don’t park and wait for them.

Do not park on nature strips or in front of driveways. Be respectful of nearby residents, who may need to get out of their driveways at the peak times.

Around a school precinct it is important to be courteous and aware. Parents and carers are all trying to get to the same place at the same time.

Follow signs, road rules and parking signs. They are there to keep our children safe.

Children like to watch behavior - be a role model. Be extra careful and patient around schools.

Slow down and be alert! Be mindful of where you are dropping your children off to school - choose a safe and legal parking spot. Do not double park.

Remember children can be unpredictable.

Choose safe places to cross the road like a school crossing or pedestrian crossing.

Spend the time to teach your children to Stop, Look, Listen and Think near the roads. Practice this life skill on your way to/from school.
