Kitchen Garden

3G

3G enjoyed a beautiful winter afternoon in the garden on Wednesday.

To begin, we checked on the compost jars. A couple of weeks ago, everyone made mini compost bins in glass jars, which replicate the large garden compost bins, and in that time worms, microbes and fungi have been busy breaking down the different layers of browns and greens.

Students worked together in their activity groups, completing lots of tasks in the garden.

The worms were given a fresh layer of green leaves and shredded newspaper. Empty sections of the garden beds were replenished with aged sheep manure. We planted another succession of lettuce and bok choi. We potted up trays with broad bean and calendula seeds. We planted some potted colour in the freshly decorated pots. The small seedlings got a ring of crushed egg shells spread around them as a snail and slug deterrent and we potted up and decorated some egg shells to make seedling egg heads.

To end the session everyone had an apple and cinnamon muffin and took home a punnet of silverbeet seedlings.

Thanks again to Amos, Katrina and Peta for helping with the session.
