KOORI EMERGING LEADERS IN SCHOOLS (KELiS)

Monika and Ella are attending a 3-part workshop for Koori Emerging Leaders in Schools (KELiS), for which they signed up to be leaders in our school's region.

The first workshop was on Tuesday 22nd of October and held at the wonderful facilities of Warragul Regional College.

Starting with a possum skin design session led by Kurnai woman Montana McStay, students learned that Kurnai babies are traditionally gifted a possum skin and have the design of a totem inside a shield. The leaders were asked to design animals that meant something to them, if they didn't know their totems.

After a great feed up, students moved to the sessions with Lionel Rose Jnr., who took them through the songwriting process. They were split up into smaller groups and were given tips for how to write a song together about leadership.

Monika and Ella wrote their own songs and got to chat with Lionel before we left!

Stay tuned for the report of next week's Careers Expo at Lowanna College...

KELiS ROADSHOW

The second of the 3-Part KELiS roadshow was held at Lowanna College on October 31st, where a Careers Expo included presentations from First Nations people in fields such at the Army, Social Services and Education. Learning also about who in our lives has a leadership role, from family, through to school and onto our work lives, students started to understand how they are leaders, too. In the exciting time where Self-Determination of First Nations students is on the agenda across the state of Victoria, we're looking forward to seeing how the Yarning Circle students take up their space and become a part of something bigger for the story of our school.
