Principals Report

Dear Wales Street Community,
World Teachers Day
World Teachers Day was celebrated in Victoria on Friday 25th October to acknowledge the significant contribution teachers make to shaping the lives of our children, young people, families and communities. Thank you to students and support staff for their acknowledgement and support of our teachers in recognising their dedication, hard work and support. Our Education Support staff organised a lovely lunch for our teachers to celebrate the day.
Art Show
On Wednesday the 6th of November we are hosting our amazing Art Show. I would like to thank Georgina Tragas for all her hard work and dedication to ensuring each student has a piece in the Art Show. It is going to be an wonderful evening for all. Come along to celebrate our students work from 5.00-7:30pm in the Clyde Street building.
Pupil Free Day
On Monday 4 November (Melbourne Cup Eve) staff will have a common professional practice day. The work undertaken on these days is consistent with departmental and school priorities including planning, preparation, assessment and reporting, curriculum development and relevant professional development.
Students will not attend school on this day, however TheirCare will provide a service on this day. They have organised a fun incursion so please book in as soon as possible to ensure a spot.
Safety Driving around our school
Recently, we have had some concerns raised by many parents and both of our crossing supervisors who are finding school drop offs and pickups increasingly stressful & hazardous. Reports have observed parents and carers speeding, double parking and not following our Kiss and Go rules at both pick up and drop off time.
We ask that families please be mindful of the issues raised around our school so that everyone has equal access, and everyone remains safe on the roads.
A reminder about how ‘Kiss and Go’ works
"You may only stop in this area for up to 2 minutes to drop off or pick up children. The driver may not leave the vehicle unattended. This means no more than 3 metres away from the vehicle. This zone applies only during the hours of operation as indicated on the sign".
Remember
• Do not leave your vehicle: To assist with traffic flow, drivers should remain in the car whilst children get in and out.
• Be timely: If your child does not get in or out of the vehicle within 2 minutes you must leave and re-enter the Kiss & Go zone.
• Child safety: Please ensure children get in or out of the vehicle on the kerb side. The back seat is the safest seat for children to travel in. Ensure children have their restraints securely fastened before driving off.
• Stay in sequence: Drop off or pick up your child close to the top of the zone, as far forward as possible. This allows vehicles following you to enter the zone in an orderly manner.
• Driver duty of care: Observe traffic when entering or leaving the zone. Use your indicator to advise when moving into or out of the zone.
• No U-turns: Do not do U-turn in school zones. They are dangerous and put children at risk.
Facilities
We had our gym floor polished on the school holidays, and it looks great and is back in use. The painting around our school grounds is also complete and our buildings are looking restored. The ramps are nearly complete with plans to open the Clyde ramp by the Art Show and all other ramp works to be ready for our school fete.
BYOD iPad
On Wednesday 30th October, we held a parent information session for next year’s Grade 4 families about the school’s BYOD iPad program. We are all aware of the need for students to be skilled as digital citizens for their participation in a global world, but we are also aware of the pitfalls of device use. The information session gave parents and carers the opportunity to understand how the program works and how iPad are into the curriculum.
Thank you
I would like to thank Lisa Ewen for her work & effort during Pina’s leave. Lisa kept the office running smoothly. We are delighted to welcome Pina back to school after her Long Service Leave.
I hope the students enjoy the long weekend.
Kind regards,
Luisa Kalenjuk
