Year 6 Canberra Excursion
Grace Groves
In Week 3, Emily and I were fortunate enough to attend the Year 6 Canberra Excursion with Year 6 students from St Francis Xavier's School, Narrabri.
After a long ten hours on the bus, we came to our final stop… Canberra. After dinner, the girls were ready for bed, but on the other side of the cabins, the boys were ready to party until 1:00 a.m. and then wake up at 4:00am, and that was exactly what they did. Our poor teachers got the same amount of sleep as those boys!
Tuesday was Parliament House. We learned about the House of Representatives (the green room) and the Senate (the red room). The chambers get their names from the colour of gum leaves; the House of Representatives is a green gum leaf still on the tree, and the Senate is pinky red, representing a gum leaf that has fallen to the ground. We did a roleplay in the House of Representatives. I was the clerk, and my role was to ensure that the speaker followed the correct laws and rules. The Clerk also rings the bell to start the meeting and to reconvene from breaks.
We then moved on to the Royal Australian Mint, where we saw coins being made and learnt about the history of our currency. Did you know that the 50c piece used to be round, but they had to change it because it felt too similar to the 20c piece?
On Wednesday, we visited the National Film and Sound Archive, Mount Ainslie Lookout to view the Parliamentary Triangle, the Museum of Australian Democracy, where we learnt how to vote, and then to my favourite activity - Questacon. Questacon is full of science and hands-on activities. I enjoyed the slide, earthquake house and all the cool experiments inside. We finished the day at the National Arboretum Canberra. We saw trees and fauna that had been saved from extinction and played in acorn pod playgrounds.
After an early breakfast, Thursday started at Old Parliament House, and then we wandered the halls of the Australian National Gallery. We saw Jackson Pollock’s ‘Blue Poles’ and Sidney Nolan’s Ned Kelly paintings. We drove through the Embassy and Lodge District of Canberra on our way to the Australian Institute of Sport. We saw some elite athletes training, the gym and an amazing pool which had a one-sided glass to improve the swimmer's stroke. Depending on the training sessions, the pool could also change from 50m to 25m. We then got into our swimmers to spend time at the International Sports and Aquatic Centre. The whirlpool and slide were definite highlights, but time went too quickly!
I would like to say a big thank you to Miss Langfield for accompanying us to Canberra. I highly recommend that you visit our Capital City and have just as much fun as we did! I can’t wait to go back and spend more time at Questacon.
