Library Lover's Day 

February 14th is a day celebrating love.  In libraries all across Australia, public, private and school, it is known as LIBRARY LOVER’S DAY – dedicated to book lovers everywhere.  The day is an opportunity to honour libraries and the wonderful books held within.  The word Library is actually a Latin word meaning ‘a place that stores books’. 

Students and staff at Ballarat High school have been asked to complete a heart about why they love our school library, books and reading.  Hearts have been placed on the windows facing Sturt street.  We have also curated a display of romance novels and are encouraging students to “READ YOUR HEART OUT”. 

We ran a Library Lovers Day paper-based quiz during the week which involved students using the catalogue, searching the shelves and using their prior library knowledge to answer 7 questions and then write what they think is the best thing about our library.

Our winner, Connor Algie (Yr 10) wrote “The best thing about the library to me is how it is a space for everybody to study, read, play games and socialise.  It is a great place to make friends and keep warm on cold days.”  Connor won a box of chocolates and a hard cover notebook.  Congratulations also to our runners up: Demi (Yr 7), Nick (Yr 8), Eve (Yr 8) and Daniel (Yr 10).  Common themes in the final question included the variety of amazing books, the friendly and supportive staff and the sense of community with our lunchtime clubs.  Thank you to everyone who showed their love for the library by participating in the quiz. 

Our school library is managed by a vibrant team of qualified library staff who aim to meet the needs and interests of every student. We genuinely welcome our users, giving students an opportunity to browse, borrow, read and study. 

We offer a number of lunchtime activities for students to make new friends, share common interests and develop new skills.  Clubs offered include Digital Creators, Craft, Book Lover’s, Mindful Monday, Anime, Dungeons and Dragons, Gaming and Creative Writing.  See Library Staff to join a club.
