Year 4 Spotlight

Term One
What a fantastic start to the new school year it has been for Year 4! The children have quickly settled into their routines, embracing new challenges and opportunities for learning. Classrooms are buzzing with energy as students dive into exciting lessons and get to know their teachers and classmates. It’s been wonderful to see friendships forming and curiosity sparking as we set the tone for a successful and fun-filled year ahead.
Literacy
In reading we have been learning about questioning, making sure that we ask ‘thick questions’ before, during, and after reading. Thick questions make us really think about the text and think outside of the box about what we have read. We also have looked at prior knowledge this week. Before we read, we write down everything we already knew about the topic and after reading we write down everything we have learnt.
~ Jojo, 4C
In writing we have been learning about memoirs, which are stories about strong memories that have happened to us before. We also have been learning how to write stories in first person, to help with our memoirs. We have also been learning about concrete and abstract nouns, concrete nouns are things we can see, touch or smell, and abstract nouns are things we think or feel, but cannot see.
~ Ella, 4C
In spelling we have been continuing SoundWaves. We have been learning about phonemes and graphemes. We have been counting the phonemes in words. My favourite part has been working together with the class and sitting on the floor to do our spelling all together.
~ Nik, 4C
Numeracy
In Maths we have been learning about place value which has included doing activities on Study Ladder, and playing fun games like Mastermind, Just Gridding, and a monster board game, which still is place value. We also learnt about how to rename a number, for example the number 400 which is 4 hundreds, can be renamed as 40 tens. We also have math groups and do different activities everyday.

Civics & Citizenship Education
In this inquiry unit, we will explore the meaning of being an active and engaged citizen in the various communities to which we belong. From our families and school, to our local neighbourhoods and even global connections, we all play a role in shaping and contributing to society.
To begin our journey, we created artwork that represents our place in our diverse communities. These artworks reflect our identities, values, and the connections we share with others. As we continue our learning, we will investigate the rights and responsibilities of citizens, how communities function, and the ways we can make a positive impact.
School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)
During our Start-Up Program, students have been actively engaging with the new School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) expectations. Through interactive lessons, discussions, and role-playing activities, students have been learning what it means to Be Respectful, Be Safe, Be a Learner, and Be Resilient in different school settings.
Teachers have guided students to understanding how specific behaviours create a positive and supportive learning environment. By participating in group activities and real-life scenarios, students are developing the skills to show kindness to others, make safe choices, stay focused on their learning, and bounce back from challenges. This strong foundation is setting the tone for a successful and respectful year ahead!
